Going Ghost! (Young Justice) Chapter 137: Partnership

Danny and Superman were both flying high above the cityscape of Metropolis, the wind rushing past them as the city stretched endlessly beneath their feet. The faint hum of traffic and distant sirens blended into the background, barely audible from their altitude.
Superman glanced sideways, a curious smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “So,” he asked, his cape fluttering behind him, “what’s the fastest you’ve ever flown?”
Danny gave it a moment’s thought, hovering a bit as he tried to recall. “I don’t know… when I first started, I think I was clocking around a hundred and ten miles per hour—give or take. But I’ve gotten faster since then. Pretty sure I could keep up with a jet now,” he said confidently.
Superman chuckled, amused by Danny’s confidence. “A hundred and ten, huh? Not bad for a beginner.” His eyes narrowed playfully. “Alright then—try to keep up!”
Before Danny could respond, Superman shot forward in a streak of red and blue, the air exploding around him with a thunderous boom. Danny’s eyes widened for half a second. “Oh, it’s on.” His ghostly aura flared, his white hair and spectral tail whipping violently in the wind as he pushed his speed to the limit.
Superman glanced back, genuinely impressed as Danny rapidly closed the distance between them. “Not bad,” he muttered with a smile.
Their race came to an abrupt halt when Superman suddenly slowed as they arrived at their destination, his attention snapping to the streets below. Sirens wailed and red-blue lights flickered. They both descended toward a tense scene—a hostage situation in progress.
Metropolis police had cordoned off the area around a rundown apartment building. From one of the upper floors, a desperate man could be seen through a broken window, holding a small boy at gunpoint. The child was crying uncontrollably, the man’s hand trembling as he pressed the weapon to the boy’s head.
Superman and Danny landed beside the leading officer, both hovering slightly above the ground.
“What’s the situation, officer?” Superman asked calmly, his tone steady yet firm.
The officer looked up in visible relief. “Superman! Thank goodness you’re here.” His gaze shifted to Danny, who floated quietly beside the hero. “Uh—who’s the kid?”
“He’s… a friend visiting from out of town,” Superman replied with a small grin, resting a reassuring hand on Danny’s shoulder.
Before the officer could ask further, a voice screamed from inside the building, hoarse and panicked. “I mean it! If Superman comes anywhere near here, I’ll blow this kid’s head off!”
The officer winced. “As you can see, it’s bad. He’s demanding a quarter of a million dollars and a helicopter out of the city. Says if we don’t meet his demands in thirty minutes…” He trailed off grimly.
Superman crossed his arms, frowning. “I see. A delicate situation… What do you suggest we—”
“Done,” Danny interrupted.
“...What?” Superman blinked, confused.
“Yeah, can we go now?” Danny asked nonchalantly, hovering beside the now-unconscious criminal—who was tied up neatly in glowing green ectoplasmic bindings. The little boy was already outside, running into his mother’s arms, sobbing as she clutched him tightly.
“Wha—How—?” the officer stammered, looking between Danny and the freed hostage in disbelief.
“While you two were busy talking,” Danny said, floating down to ground level, “I just turned invisible, flew inside, possessed the guy, and brought them both out. Easy.” He flashed a peace sign with both hands, grinning proudly.
Superman blinked, utterly speechless. “...You can possess people?”
“Yup,” Danny replied with a shrug. “Super useful in hostage stuff. Not so great at parties though. Or maybe it is? I don't actually know”
The officer exhaled, shaking his head. “What a… resourceful friend you have there, Superman.”
Superman smiled awkwardly. “Agreed.” His lips twitched, still processing what he had just witnessed.

Later that evening, a different crisis struck—a high-rise apartment engulfed in flames.
Danny darted in and out of the blazing inferno, his body phasing effortlessly through walls as he carried people to safety two or three at a time. Smoke and heat rolled off him, but his ghost form barely felt it. The cries of trapped residents echoed inside as the building groaned under the strain.
Outside, Superman directed the rescue with pinpoint precision, using his X-ray vision to scan each floor. “Two more on the east wing! Fourth floor, near the stairwell!” he shouted.
“Got it!” Danny called back, vanishing through the wall in a flash of green light. Seconds later, he emerged carrying a woman and her child in his arms, their faces streaked with soot and tears.
The crowd outside cheered as Danny set them down safely. Within minutes, the entire building was cleared.
Superman floated back, took a deep breath, and unleashed a freezing gust of air from his lungs. The flames hissed and crackled before dying out completely, leaving the structure coated in frost and steam.
When the last ember faded, Superman turned toward Danny with a wide grin and raised his hand. “Nice work, partner.”
Danny just stared at him blankly. “Are you… seriously asking for a high five right now?”
Superman chuckled, holding his hand higher. “C’mon, it’s tradition.”
Danny sighed and finally smacked his palm against Superman’s with a faint slap. “Happy now?”
“Very,” Superman said, his grin widening.

Their next stop was by the docks, where an illegal arms deal was underway. Two gangs were discussing business amid stacks of shipping containers, each side armed with high-powered plasma rifles and explosives.
When Superman and Danny landed between them, the sudden shock made every criminal raise their weapons at once.
Danny’s eyes flared bright green as he extended both hands. “Nope,” he said flatly.
A powerful wave of telekinetic force ripped through the dock, wrenching every weapon from their hands and sending them clattering across the pavement. Superman followed up instantly, sweeping the rest of the area with his heat vision, melting any remaining weaponry into useless puddles of metal.
In a matter of seconds, the gang members were disarmed, disoriented, and completely surrounded by the two heroes.

Within the heart of the Metropolis Power Plant, Livewire hovered several feet above the ground, her entire body crackling with arcs of raw electricity. Blue lightning coursed along her limbs and across her hair like writhing serpents as she drew more and more energy from the power lines surrounding her. The lights throughout the massive facility flickered and dimmed under her pull, the air vibrating with the hum of charged power.
Her laughter echoed through the metal structure as she unleashed a barrage of electric bolts in every direction. Sparks flew as her attacks struck walls, shattered consoles, and blasted through steel pipes. With a wave of her hand, nearby debris—broken machinery, metal panels, and even heavy steel beams—lifted into the air, suspended by her electromagnetic control. With a flick of her wrist, she hurled them toward Superman and Danny Phantom with deadly precision.
Danny reacted first, opening his mouth and unleashing a bone-rattling Ghost Wail that rippled through the air like a shockwave. The sound distorted the air itself, dispersing the arcs of lightning and breaking Livewire’s control over the debris. Her attack faltered, the objects crashing harmlessly to the ground. In that same instant, Superman streaked forward like a crimson blur and delivered a single, devastating punch that sent Livewire flying backward, crashing through several support columns before she smashed into the far wall.
She launched herself off the wall while the two heroes began to circle her, moving in perfect coordination. Danny fired rapid blasts of glowing green ectoplasmic orbs, each one detonating against Livewire’s crackling energy shield with thunderous force. Superman followed up from the opposite angle, his heat vision cutting through the haze of electricity like twin red lances.
Livewire screamed in fury and extended both arms, forming a blinding sphere of electric power around herself. Superman appeared directly above her, his cape billowing, and with a single powerful strike, he smashed through her energy field. The force of the blow sent her plummeting downward like a comet, crashing into the ground hard enough to send chunks of earth and concrete flying into the air.
Danny and Superman hovered side by side above the newly formed crater. Their eyes glowed—Danny’s bright neon green, Superman’s burning crimson. In perfect sync, they unleashed twin beams of energy that spiraled downward.
Livewire roared in defiance, pouring every ounce of power she had left into one last attack. Her lightning blast met their combined energy halfway, the three forces clashing in a blinding maelstrom. The air rippled and cracked from the sheer power of it, locked in a tense stalemate.
Both heroes gave a final surge of strength, pushing past their limits. Their beams flared brighter—then, with a thunderous explosion, they overpowered Livewire completely. The resulting blast shook the power plant to its foundation. When the light finally faded, all that remained was a scorched, smoking crater—and at its center, Livewire lay unconscious, her body still faintly sparking.
…
“That. Was. Incredible!” Superman cheered triumphantly as he and Danny soared through the sky, the sunset painting the clouds orange and gold. Livewire floated beneath them, safely encased in a glowing green containment field crafted by Danny’s ghost energy.
“I can see why Batman and the others like having partners!” Superman said with a grin that could light up the skyline. “That was easily one of the most fun fights I’ve had in weeks!”
“Glad you’re enjoying yourself.” Danny said almost sarcastically.
Superman glanced over at him with a bright, genuine smile. “You’re an awesome partner, Danny. We make a great team.”
Danny turned his head away quickly, pretending to focus on the horizon. It was hard—impossible, really—not to be affected by Superman’s warmth. The man practically radiated positivity, and it made staying stoic a losing battle.
By the time they dropped Livewire off at a secure prison facility, the sun had dipped low, casting long shadows across the city. As they landed back near where their mission began, Superman rested one hand on his hip.
“You know,” he began, “I just wanted to thank you for agreeing to do this with me—”
Danny blinked. “Whoa, hold on—back up a sec.” He stared at Superman, confused. “Agreeing? I didn’t agree to this. I was forced to come here!”
“Pardon me, what?” Superman asked, taken aback by what Danny had just said, “I was under the impression that you and Batman at least talked it out before you agreed. Was that not the case?”
“Be for real dude, Batman and talking in the same sentence? You and I both know he communicates with grunts and glares and we somehow understand what he's trying to say” Danny scoffed, rolling his eyes.
“I… I honestly can't argue with that…” Superman muttered, “So you really had no say in coming here?” He asked, sounding a bit disheartened to hear that.
Danny sighed as he rubbed the back of his head, “Something happened back home that ended up with being suspended. Batman came and picked me up and just told me I was coming here to Metropolis and working under you”
Superman pitched the bridge of his nose for a moment, clearly exasperated. He peeked out towards Danny from the corner of his eye, “Say… How would you feel about getting something to eat?”
Danny shrugged as he said, “I'm down”

Ok first of all banger chapte, I'm in awe of your writing, like seriously that moment danny and superman synced up with the glowing eyes and Lazer eyes was peak cinema the symbolism alone was crazy you can just feel that Danny's going to be a top tier hero one day. Now I saw another reader mention changing Danny suit and I hope the author decides not to take this path and if you do I hope you keep in mind that underneath all the snark, Sarcasm, and grief danny just a kid who wanted to be a hero, so maybe a cape like in that one episode when he separated himself. It could have the bat symbol on it, like a thanks batman for taking me in at my worse. Sorry for the tangent I think the talk of a leather jacket triggered me lol.
