how do I stop trying to learn a language as everything having a direct translation and words not changing on context like in American as I cannot seem to break this habit

I would also like to add that I have never really learnt a language before and everything from school is a memory. I have chosen russian as it's my heritage but when watching the videos words are different on context and it's all just really confusing

when I am very just starting a language and I know nothing. Take russian for example once I know the alphabet how would I actually progress as I cannot watch videos if I dont know any words and basic phrases wont mean much in the videos that much.
