In this episode I feel we are seeing two sides of Uthred;, one where he is becoming a skilled and accomplished warrior. He's learning how to devise plans, proven his skills and becoming a leader men will follow into battle. The other is a rash, hot tempered and impulsive young person. Based on the timeline and aging in the show I would put Uthred's age at about 25-26. People like Odda the Younger not only have prejudice against Uthred because he's a "Pagan", but he fears him because knows he will never be the man Uthred is, you then add in the Mildreth factor and it's just a bomb getting ready to go off. Then factor in Alfred. Alfred absolutely knows what he's doing. He knows that he has a tool in Uthred to use against the Dans to advance his goal of a united England. He uses every advantage of the law and Church, which were pretty much one thing back then, to force Uthred's hand. He's given empty promises to Uthred, or twisted circumstances to benefit himself and screw over Uthred. I do feel if Uthred would have waited instead of barging in on the church services, he might have had better luck with Alfred's recognition of Uthred's killing of Ubba. However, since Uthred did this in front of everyone, he basically embarrassed Alfred, and Alfred wasn't going to let that stand. Hence, why Alfred dolled out the punishment he did. Alfred knew that Uthred's pride would be affected by this and that is exactly what he wanted to accomplish.

This show is filmed in Hungary, except for the few coastal scenes. Hungary is landlocked so the coastal shots are in Ireland and England.

This show just keeps getting better and better every single episode. Loving your reactions to it.

Great reaction guys!...To understand Uhtred's behavior in this first season, you should keep in mind that in Bernard Cornwell's books, Uhtred is a teenager, with the characteristics of his age: courage, courage, strength... and with a temperament that still not able to control...yet

Subbed for this show and absolutely loving your reactions so far! I personally love Uhtred because he might be the hero of the story but he still has his flaws. He isn't perfect and as they say wisdom comes with the age, right now he is still young and has to learn from his mistakes. But overall deep down his morals and heart are on the right place.

The army emerging out of the shadows behind Uhtred is still one of my favourite shots from this show

So glad y'all are enjoying this show. IMHO it's right up there with other greats you've reacted to. And I knew Uhtred son of Uhtred would ascend to the pantheon! I almost envy you & others who get to experience this journey for the 1st time. George R. R. Martin (writer of Game of Thrones) constantly raved about this show while it was running, massive compliment to the production and writing throughout. The book series "Saxon Stories" that the TLK is based on are really great as well. "Uhtred the Godless", Aeolderman warrior from Bebbanburg was a real person, and an ancestor of author Bernard Cornwell who wrote the books. The real Uhtred did live during this period, though his adventures in the books/show are largely fiction.

That’s what I was thinking.. Uhtred warned Oswald he’d kill him if he caught him again. It was the justice he didn’t get in Wessex.

p.s. great points y’all. I had similar reactions. I had to rethink my instinct and remind myself that he was raised a Dane. Where their brand of honor and violence is life. He seems hotly rash next to pious people, but he’s tame in comparison to other Danes. Now, honor: Ubba dies and he puts axe in his hand so he can go to Valhalla. That’s Uhtred. His “religion” of sorts; honor. THEN Alfred made him crawl and his wife STOOD BY and did not fight for him!! She shamed him. Kneel of Shame (lol Nikki we called it that too!) 🔔 That just the thing you do NOT do. So in that moment how can you ever look at a spouse the same, if you are in his POV? He told Oswald if he caught him, he’d kill him. He went full-DANE about it. In our world, like Nikki said, you might leave. But, they were oil and water to begin with. It hadn’t been tested. The pious nature of Mildred, he respected, until she used it to shame him. That relationship just fish out of water for them both. :( rough!!!

Amazing episode and reaction! The whole sequence of Uhtred's plan leading to the attack was so good. The constant beat in the background too! Huge grin when Steven announced Uhtred is one of his dudes

Ashley

Yay!!! For years been like, Uhtred will be one of Steven’s “dudes” and 5 eps in, got it!!. Saw folks commenting the same in YT! He’s top-3 fav male TV character for me!
