Notes for historical context Toranaga is based off of the real Tokugawa Edo his city is later known as Tokyo, in reference to Tokugawa the family name. James Clavell, the author of the book was a POW of the Japanese during WW2. Obviously the book has more details of the characters and story arcs changed for the series. The 1980’s version has some scenes this updated version does not, it’s dated but they did film on location in the actual castles of Japan. Some scenes of this new one is filmed in Vancouver, Canada.

The armor is sometimes described as the most beautiful clothes for death. At the end of the age of war it was reported to be tradition to light incense in the helmets so the head when taken would smell sweet. You were to display the heads of the enemies taken in combat. They also needed to inspect the head to make sure the samurai didn’t take the head of previously dead samurai, only killed in combat heads would be paid for the common samurai. If the head was from a higher samurai or lord you’d be paid more.

The lines john spoke of are are the reason they speak Portuguese in Brazil but Spanish in the rest of South America one of the lines he speaks of runs straight through South America. it was the Pope at the time that forced the Spanish and Portuguese to abide by the treaty to stop them going to war with each other over the new lands as the catholic church didn't want Catholic nations warring because of Protestant nations like England and Holland.

The episodes were released week by week. As for the subtitles, i feel like they did well with having them a little slower than some (or most) other shows/movies. And i like that. It makes it easier to read and follow along at the same time.

I love the way the cinematography in this series plays with depth of field and focus; the waves/lines in the background are so cool when the camera’s focusing on something in the foreground. Also, Yabushige has to be the most cheerfully brutal character I’ve seen since maybe Lalo in BCS. He’s so entertaining to watch, even when he’s pondering what a man’s moment of death truly consists of. Can’t wait to continue my rewatch with you guys! Great commentary and analysis as usual.
