Unfortunately they were property but so too were all family members under the leader. They served at the whim of their immediate leader and the ruling daiymo. The male samurai had someone to take care of all money transactions as it was deemed below the craft of the bushi. Typically it fell to the wife or consort to do these items. Unless if they had a castellan. Ishido is liked as one of these lower samurai characters and bureaucrat. In the book this is talked about more. It comes more important in the story later with Mariko. (No spoilers)

Thanks a lot for the response! The right for divorce alone is huge for the time, it means they weren't treated as property. I also love how they had roles and responsibilities, managed household economics and all of that. I fell in love with Japan through Pride fighting championship waaay back in the day. I also love how modern Japan protects its culture and way of life from tourists and migrants. You are welcome to work or visit, as long as you respect their customs and culture they will respect you back, but they will never consider you to be Japanese, because that just wouldn't make sense at all. Western civilization has a lot to learn from Japan. That is true diversity, different nations with different customs, laws and culture to discover through travel and nomad living.

The character Mariko, is from a very powerful samurai family. Women not uncommon were taught the spear, naginata, and bow. Most court women all carried a knife (tanto), to protect their lady, themselves, and to commit seppuku if required. Some women were skilled with the short sword or the killing sword (katana or tachi). It wasn’t equal but they had some rights western women did not have at the period of time. This included being able to divorce.

My grandparents who were very old school Japanese parents were always telling us, depend only on yourself (not always your siblings). No one is looking out for you but you. So Toranaga telling his son things like you are playing games of friends and enemies when you have no friends is very core to the relationship most sons have with their father or grandfather. It’s harsh but a layer to keep yourself safe.

The world is so detailed, this is why I love historical shows with actual depth and dialogue! I also love the incredible costumes and armors. Didn't know women in Japan had access to learning so many skills for the time, they weren't considered incompetent like it mostly was in the western civilization. Thank you again for your reaction!

The scene with Buntaro in the harbor is just the best. I like it so much, from the music to what’s happening. The first thing he does after fighting all the soldiers is bow, then comes the heavy kneel - loyalty and servitude at its finest. One of those scenes that is right up my alley.
