Steven, OK, I finally got to watch! And you're so me! This is exactly the same thing I said! Spencer reminding me so much of young John Dutton! Diff actor tho. And I thought that there's no way Taylor did that on accident right? And at the dinner table, Spencer reminded me so much of Beth, right? That entire scene is exactly BETTHHHHHH!!! being so obnoxious and just everything she would do in the absolute best way! There's still so many questions I'm dying to find out! we're all on pins and needles, but I think we've got to go with our money on Spencer right? Taylor better not leave us hanging by the end of the season too. That's coming up soon. We better not have to wait a whole Nother season to find out the mysteries! Yes, that was a boarding school, and yes all those girls were Native American. They were forcibly taken from their families in order to be "civilized", since it was believed that Native people had the intelligence of an animal or a child. Hence the nuns supervising the girls while they were bathing; it was believed they didn't know how to clean themselves "properly". The children were forced to wear European hairstyles and clothes, speak English, and convert to Christianity, and they were often given new English names and identities. Children who were caught speaking their native languages were often beaten like the girl in this episode, and worse. There was a lot of abuse, whether physical, psychological, sexual, pretty much any kind of abuse you can imagine. Quite a few children died of disease, and in some cases they were buried by their own classmates. In the event a child returned to their home community, they were often deeply traumatized by what they went through, and felt alienated from their families and culture. It is widely believed that the high rates of alcoholism, substance abuse, and suicide within many Native communities in the US and Canada is the direct result of the residential school system.

Hi Guys. If you look at the knife that spencer carries, it is the same knife that Sam gave to Elsa. Spencer is the youngest brother of Elsa and John I believe.

Spencer is the son of James and Margaret and brother to John - who we will call John Sr (who was in this episode with the salt and pepper beard always at Jacob’s side, but not named). Jack (getting married to Elizabeth) is John Sr’s son and therefore Spencer’s nephew. Spencer was born after James and Margret settled on the land. We don’t know exactly when, but given this is set 40 years after 1883, he’s probably in his early to mid 30’s. So he was very young when his parents died (10 years after settling) and his uncle and aunt (Jacob and Cara) came to take care of them. The big mystery we don’t know is who is the Yellowstone John Dutton’s grand father. Jack or Spencer… a mystery to be revealed at some stage no doubt.

You're wondering why Spencer left Montana to go to Africa. I think he never came back after the war. He went to the war in Europe (WWI) and then went straight to Africa. I could be wrong, but I think that's what happened.

yeah here in Canada they are called Residential schools and they were extremely brutal my Ex Fiancees mother went to one as they weren't shut down here until the late 80s a few years ago they tore that school down and found the bodies of over 300 children and thats just one small school from a small part of canada

I was going to provide a link to a actual family tree but thought it had one or two spoilers on there so thought better of it. Hope this helps a little, I also included the made of the actor/actress as well. Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) and John Sr. (James Badge Dale) are James (Tim McGraw)/Margret's (Faith Hill) sons, and Jack (Darren Mann) is John Sr's son. Also side note, the actress playing Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph) is also in the new Paramount Plus show "Landman" which is also a Taylor Sheridan show.

Spencer Dutton, the guy in Africa, is the younger son of James and Margaret Dutton. His older brother is John Dutton Sr., the number two guy back at the ranch with a beard. Both of them are nephews of Jacob and Cara Dutton. Jack Dutton, the kid getting married, is John Sr.'s son, which makes him James and Margaret's grandson. Side note: the guy playing John Dutton Sr., James Badge Dale, played Robert Leckie in The Pacific.

FYI - For over 100 years the US government sent by force Native American children to remote boarding schools as part of a systematic effort to seize tribal lands and eradicate Native American culture… some of the schools were run by the Catholic Church and there was widespread abuse/torture of those children.

You definitely need to look up a family tree cause it's confusing the first time watching. Family wise, you don't see John I a lot here in this episode since the focus is more on Jack (John's son) and Spencer (John's and Elsa's younger brother/James' and Margaret's son), but you do see John in this episode he's just in the background.
