Not a lawyer, but pretty sure you have to grab whole paragraphs rather than basic concepts. Otherwise it would be possible to protect ideas like man rescues princess, coming of age xiaxia with a tournament, or litrpg

"Won't get mugged by criminals" but isn't that just what happened without them being criminals yet?

Honour Rae

Lol. That reminds me when I was first working out the world building and card levels, Legendary rank was on the level of 'so good it's almost broken'. And Mythic is pretty much broken. That's why the vast majority of the cards are Common and Uncommon.

Honour Rae

He is in a lot of danger and will have to figure out some tricks to avoid this sort of thing. Some of those ideas are good but I have to be careful about him just getting amazing card after amazing card. (I mean, he is the main character but...)

Honour Rae

The baby thing? It was supposed to be "cried like a kid who watched his puppy die in front of him" but I thought that was too dark.

Honour Rae

Dang it. Every time I think I'm about to pull a fast one, my commenters prove they're onto me. lol. I think you'll like the next chapter.

Honour Rae

Very, very much so!

Honour Rae

It's been so long since I read that series. I need to reread to make sure there's not too many similarities. lol. Can confirm these dragons don't kill themselves when their riders die, or vice versa.

Honour Rae

lol. I do like that theory and there is a connection between them and the scourge but as for engineering or terraforming... if I did that, I'd have Anne McCaffery's lawyers on my ass.

Honour Rae

Lol! There will indeed be crazy shit.

Honour Rae

All I'll say is there's a reason he got his Gambling class first...

Honour Rae

That's a good question! We're going to get more into the culture of the hive as Arthur grows up but I don't see this as too much of a spoiler: For most people, living in the hive is pretty great. If you have a combat oriented dragon, you get card shards at every eruption. If you climb levels in the hive, your family gets taken care of. It's dangerous but valuable riders are rich and privileged. Plus they're helping out their kingdom from a very real threat. There are some people who take their dragons and disappear but probably not as many as you imagine. And they'd be on the lower end -- Common with some Uncommon. Those who get the shorter end of the stick.

Honour Rae

Thank you! Fixed!

Marc Whipple

That card would be beyond Legendary. That would be OP to the point of actual brokenness.

Marc Whipple

This is the premise of “Dragonriders of Pern,” which this story has a few faint similarities to. Only a few faint ones, though.

Noah

He desperately needs a card that stops other people from seeing his cards. Maybe he can develop a rare card that’s stops Magic from effecting him? It’d be really useful to force others into non-Magic fights, since that’s where his skill’s will really shine. It’d also help a lot with his Gambling and Thief classes. A card that lets him show people fake versions of his cards would be useful too, and probably a lot less expensive. Maybe some form of illusion card?

tales -> tails

Touch

That's a strange simile lmao

Michael Vonica

A friend with emotional control powers? Sounds like an excellent opportunity for training that he can get no other way. There's probably even an introspection skill to allow him to detect any foreign changes within his own mind, or a mental discipline skill to control himself in stressful situations.

Yashakami

I'm glad his first encounter with nobles didnt go too bad, hopefully he learns to be more careful. He has already seen dragon riders turn on each other. He needs to be prepared for their seedy underbelly.

I keep getting the vibe/feeling that humans are the invasive species and Dragons were either engineered as a terraforming method or pre-existing in a natural cycle with the scourge. Dunno if I'm alone in this.

seth dauer

You call it indoctrination because you have an outside perspective. To them it's normal. What are the alternatives? Beyond probable desertion charges, forced to become serfs and give up their cards? Feed and care for their dragons is probably beyond the means of any other than a noble. Even nobles are giving up their children for a chance to become more. The world is internally consistent so far and well within what humans can normalize.

Alphafenrir401

Ok I really hope he gets a dragon now I want to see the crazy shit they could pull lol

Joshua Flowers

Agreed, getting those shards is one thing; keeping them is another.

Richard Brown

I’d love to see a chapter where he puts his Gambling class to work and gets a bunch of shards off some rich nobles ..who of course would blame him of cheating and steal all the shards he has on him lol

Pred Head

I wonder when we find out what actually keeps people from getting their dragon and bugging out. I assume it's something on the dragon end because so far all I've seen compelling riders is money and accommodations for a hazardous job along with however much cultural indoctrination they bought into.
