New Character Four: Derek
🕑 Added 2017-01-02 23:15:16 +0000 UTC First post of 2017! :DSo out of all these first four characters Derek was the one I'd fleshed out the least initially. I believe in the video I described him simply as "male Casey." This was because the one thing I was sure about with him was that I wanted him to be as irresistible to women as Casey is to men. But I've put some more work into him since then and here's what I came up with.
Derek is one of those guys who just has constant bad luck. He's the guy who barely misses the bus and then it starts to rain just before he gets chased by a dog. Does he take these circumstances in stride and grow as a person for it? Frankly no, he complains a lot. He's as cynical as they come. One of the few things he enjoys is his fascination with movies and movie culture, as a part time job he works in one of the last remaining video rental stores in America. He writes largely negative movie reviews on his blog and is always ready for a fight when anyone disagrees with his opinions online. Not that he doesn't get into his share of fights in the real world. He's a bit shorter than the average towering male in the Switch universe, and his loud mouth and spiky opinions have earned him an ass kicking more than once.
So is there any light in his gloomy world at all? Well yes: women. Derek may have his social failings but he somehow always knows exactly what to say to get the girls to slide their panties off. I want him to be just as versatile as the other new characters in that pretty much no female character is safe from his charm. Everyone from married women to lesbians will say yes to him 90% of the time. If anyone could get Casey, Bria, and Sylvia all into bed at once it would be Derek. But what do you think? If you have any ideas or anything to add I'm open to suggestions. :)

Thanks! I know it's going to be rough attempting to make a male porn character relatable, I'd hoped that making him supernaturally unlucky might even things out a bit but it doesn't look like I conveyed what I was going for very well in the description. The good thing is when it comes to fiction a character doesn't have to be likable, they just have to be interesting. I hope when the comic comes along I can manage that much. :)

Just something I've observed over the years from lurking the internet: there are two kinds of people when it comes to erotica, those who like to have someone they can project into (which is either a power fantasy or someone relatable) and those who like to see the subject of the action far removed (sometimes entirely abstracted). The latter camp will not be pleased with Derek no matter what you make him out to be, unless you remove him completely, IMO. Me? I'm liking how all the new characters are shaping up so far, if that counts for anything. You could say you're definitely keeping my interest. ;)

Hm, y'know? If "Has a voice in their head that may be a demon and may be an imaginary friend" isn't exclusive to Casey, what if Derek has something like that? A demon in his head coaching him on what to say?

One thing I notice is that the guy seems quite unlikable. Which is pretty normal for a male porn protagonist, since as readers, men are likely to be jealous of his success rate :). Porno men are either lothario-types or super-innocent nerds who get the girl in the end- your way allows for a lot more sex scenes, though. Also, it's curious that I view the men as unlikable when CASEY is the most flawed, crazy member of the cast. Of course, that's because she's ultra-hot, so I immediately forgive it :).

The dude can talk any woman in the world into bed, and is having his dick serviced by both the new curvy awesome chick and the one with the TITANIC rack? The only change I can recommend is to give him my exact name and appearance, so I can live vicariously through this asshole :). He sounds a bit like a more petulant version of Archie Andrews- the clumsiness/bad luck combined with inexplicably hot women going after him is CLASSIC Archie, to the point where this is basically a smuttier, sluttier Riverdale going on here. Except Derek is way less likeable than Archie, who is a bit of a cad and overly-impulsive, but doesn't get into arguments for fun (unless you count the sillier, funnier 1930s/40s version). Since this is in a world weird enough for Switch to exist (though I guess she could just be entirely a figment of Casey's imagination), maybe make him have some pheromone thing that makes girls lust for him? Or just have him attract EVERY woman, including ugly or fat ones? Having some Lena Hyena-types chasing him might be pretty funny :).

Hey that's perfectly fine lol. That's a big part of why I'm running these characters by you guys months before they'll ever see the light of day. I mean not every character is going to be for everyone, but I still want the chance to get feedback and make tweaks to these guys before their comic debut.

Hey opinions are what I like to hear! What you're describing is pretty much what I want out of this character. I want so many shitty things to happen to him that when he does get laid you're happy for him. When I say he complains a lot I think what I meant was that when it comes to his bad luck he doesn't get depressed, he gets fired up and angry and yells about it to vent. Anyhow thanks for the feedback, it's good to know that I'll need to put in some extra effort to make him more sympathetic.

You know it's funny I didn't consider his looks as a factor because at this point in the comic pretty much everyone is good looking. But that's something I'll have to start factoring in. With the high school setting there will be much more extras milling about in the background and that will make the hot characters stand out more. I may end up shrinking down his physique a little bit, making him more scrawny and a little less muscular.

The world of Switch seems to be populated by unlikely characters. To me that's part of what makes for such interesting chemistry in the universe created by Reinbach. IMHO, it appears to me that Derek's looks are what gets the girls to slide their panties down. My only request for this character would be for him to be as well endowed or better endowed than Royce. That may go a long way toward helping the girls overlook his lesser qualities!

Seems like an odd combination. A whiny, opinionated movie critic who somehow manages to get any girl he wants. Sound like me in high school minus the lady charm (I often cringe remembering my younger self.). It sounds funny he's just unlucky in everything like he's cursed but it's like a double edged sword where his bad luck in life turns into good luck with sex. Although, maybe have him be just an aspiring movie critic whose only solace in life is watching movies and dreams of becoming a pro like Roger Ebert, but every time he tries to get ahead in life something bad happens to him or he fails miserably, a relatable smuck who things never work out for in the end, except for when it comes to sex. Not to sound cynical but to me he sounds like a douche who complains and manages to get any chick he wants despite some bad luck here and there. Just my opinion, it is your story and I haven't seen what scenarios you have planned for him so it could be cool.
