Quiet Sketch
🕑 Added 2019-04-02 03:38:53 +0000 UTCHey guys the Monday pin up is still on the way tonight, but in the meantime I hope you like this sketch for KainRezo072 starring Quiet from Metal Gear Solid V.
I sank some time into MGS V, but I didn't make it to Quiet here in the story. Nothing against the game, I thought it was well made for what it was. It's just that I didn't have much interest in the prequel-era of the series centered on Big Boss. Solid Snake was my guy.
So like I said I didn't reach Quiet's introduction, but my brother did, and his recounting of her concept as a character still cracks me up to this day. According him, this was a woman who:
-Is fiercely loyal to her male master, who is roughly twice her age.
-Never speaks.
-Is allergic to clothes.
He said the only thing missing from Quiet was that she doesn't bring you beer on command. And from what I've seen, that assessment feels pretty dead-on. Makes me wonder why I don't remember Quiet stirring much controversy, as I'm sure there were plenty of people sitting around waiting to get mad at this kind of female representation. Maybe they were too busy trying to get the next Dead or Alive game banned in America at the time, who can say.
But am I wrong about Quiet? Is there more nuance than I'm giving her credit for? If so let me know in the comments!

The controversy was hilarious because Kojima said to everyone "When you find out why she doesn't talk you will regret your words and deeds" and then we found out and it was still dumb as heck.

For sure, to be clear I didn't mean to imply that there was no reason for her ailments explained in-game. I just thought the reasoning for her condition was made up retroactively. Like. "We want a naked girl who doesn't talk. Come up with a plausible backstory to make that fit the narrative somehow. Aaaand GO!"

See, that's the kind of "classy" stunt I'd expect from Tomonobu Itagaki, not the guy heralded as one of the most brilliant gamedevs of our time. I'm willing to bet it was Policenauts, 'cuz Snatcher had the scene where the PC walked in on the girl taking a shower (she was 16 in Japan!).

Ah. Well, if your lungs are inoperable but you are somehow still alive I would expect that to make it very difficult to speak.

Can't remember if it was Snatcher or Policenauts, but I know in one of Kojima's early games, you had the option to bounce the boobs of every female NPC. I think he has issues indeed. XD

There's as much nuance to Quiet as there is clothes on her. Don't know what Kojima was going for, he already made the perfect woman to make us ashamed of our actions via The Boss, but there you go. Kojima, he has Issues with women.

Her lungs being burned is why she has to absorb oxygen/water through her skin, not why she doesn't speak. And yeah, Kojima don't give a fuck about controversy. Hell, most Japanese developers don't.

There was a in story reason for her not speaking which is very spoiler heavy so I won't put it here, She also absorbed air and water through her skin, hence not wanting to wear much clothes. Clearly, this part was justifying fan service.

Quiet did stir controversy, but in the context of Kojima it was like people complaining about sex scenes in Game of Thrones. There's a bit more nuance to her character (IIRC her lungs were burned so that's why she can't speak, and she uses photosynthesis to breath which is why she wears so little clothing) but they still don't really excuse her design.

She talks a little. It's weird that she's so loyal after trying to kill you twice but I think she mostly just liked fucking with Miller. Or maybe, since Ocelot did that too, that might just be how Kojima views Russians. There is a bit more nuane to her character but it's pretty shallow.
