Reinbach

For sure! I can totally see that angle.

Reinbach

Thanks! Got it down. :)

Lukas West

Question for Liz: Is there any photos of you before you became a hot slice of toast?

Alex Barton

PS Same goes for every other movie not made with English dialogue...

Alex Barton

Late comment but no contest. Kurosawa and Mizoguchi made their movies in Japanese with Japanese actors speaking Japanese. Miyazaki's masterpieces sound weird without their original soundtracks no matter how well dubbed they are. Brain can take in subtitles with one glance so I stick with the original every time 'cos that's how they were *made*... =)

Reinbach

No harm in being old and cranky! XD

The BRM

Elianna stealth upped herself to best girl. Lol. Honestly though, I like both, but I lean more towards subs. I will be honest to me, most english anime dubs are overrated and I don't think the talent pool most anime studios can afford nowadays affords them a lot of options for good actors. We're long past the days where you could snag Bryan Cranston for your lead in Macross Plus, or the Cowboy Bepop dub. It's why I still in many way prefer the Streamline pictures dubs from the 1980s because most of the actors there had a huge resume of work in and out of anime during. But I could also just be old and cranky.

Reinbach

Nice!

Kherbellos

Oh yes, it was glorious

Reinbach

High fives! Sounds like we agree on all points here.

Reinbach

If you mean Lucoa from Dragon Maid, I did hear that they took some pretty infamous liberties with that particular dub, such as making Kobayashi say she's "not into girls" when that wasn't exactly the intent of the original text.

Reinbach

Thanks again for suggesting! :)

Reinbach

I think Cowboy Bebop remains, to this day, one of the strongest arguments in favor of what a good dub can bring to the table. All four of those lead actors are legends in the medium.

Reinbach

I will admit that I can not tell what "good" acting is and isn't in any language but English either.

Reinbach

Right on, was it good?

Reinbach

Nice to have the option in any case! :)

Reinbach

Yeah that's pretty lame when something gets rather deliberately lost to time like that. I'm personally not a fan of the Netflix dub of Evangelion, for example. (Just get the actors all in one room and tell them how to pronounce NERV so they're all on the same page for fuck's sake!) But as far as I know, the far superior ADV dub can't be legally streamed anywhere now.

Reinbach

I still need to watch that one!

Reinbach

Noted! XD

Reinbach

I've seen some of that, yeah. Like how Osaka has a southern accent in the dub of Azumanga Daioh.

Reinbach

Barely! XD

Reinbach

Oh for sure, I agree.

Reinbach

Well if I've never seen it then I suppose by proxy Ellie hasn't either. XD

Reinbach

XD

AintAsGoodAsIOnceWas

I gotta be honest, as a fan of animation as an artform, I typically prefer dubs so I can fully take in the scenes and still understand what's being said without having to quickly glance back and forth to read. I'm not a slow reader, I just don't like having to divide my attention. Also, I completely agree with Rein about comedic timing, especially since sometimes the subs just have the whole line visible, when there's meant to be a pause between the setup and the punchline. Often this means that you have the information verbally before the visuals catch up, sort of ruining the joke.

Deano

Couldn't put it better myself. You can't actually judge the quality of a performance if you don't speak the language.

Kudos707

I don't trust dubs anymore. I've only ever watched like two accurate dubs, the older ones are garbage but ever since they made Lucoa have some retarded feminist BS dialogue for the dub I won't go back. Can't even really escape it with subs either because the translators keep shoving in dumb zoomer slang in there. Fukkin sucks.

IndecentTwig

HAHAHA YESSSSS. This is exactly what I pictured in my head when I imagined this discussion; though I definitely wasn't expecting to see it so soon!

Kyman201

Reminds me of a comment I saw, something like "To all the people who say that the Japanese voicework is so much better... It's really not. You just don't speak the language so you can't identify when someone's giving a shit performance in an anime."

HungryOuroboros

Imagine watching Cowboy Bebop or Black Lagoon subbed instead of dubbed. Or ghost stories, but at the opposite end of the spectrum.

Deano

Dubs over subs every day of the week. Obviously it would be better if I actually understood Japanese, but as I don't, its far more emotionally resonant to actually hear what the characters are saying and how they're delivering each line of dialogue. I think a lot of people just prefer subs because they're trying to fit in with the other weebs honestly lmao

Kherbellos

I see both points, so if the anime hits me well enough, I give the dubs a chance. Exception is edgeruners, I started that directly with the German dub

jubs

If it's something that completely changes the story like Ghost Stories, then I'm all for it, two for the price of one! =)

jubs

Yes, you're wrong. Subs are de way if you're _watching_ anime. But if you're not watching and just want to have something in the background, use your dubs, it's not like you're watching it anyway.

Jim D

There are great dubs and there are bad dubs. There are even some oddballs with both. Bad dub: Kaleido Star. I can't even think about this one without cringing. Great dub: Kiki's Delivery Service first edition. The music and Foley work were phenomenal. Bad Dub: Kiki's Delivery Service - Ghibli approved version. It's not the same movie and they destroyed Phil Hartman's work completely. My DVD of the original oxidized so I'm pissed at the mouse and Ghibli for making it unavailable.

Licorice Lain

Ellie, Black Lagoon. I rest my case.

MstrJerby

I would respect her opinion more if she was topless.

Crimson03

Its funny, coz in some anime, JP Okinawans suddenly have an American cowboy/redneck accent in the 90s.

Kyman201

Give her credit. Given the wordcount of the responses, she probably did indeed last more than ten seconds. Barely.

GregD

As someone that has experienced different dubs of the same material, I think it does depend on the dub. But on the other hand, if a dub makes a work more accessible to a different audience than the original, then I'm all for it existing, to add context.

Squid Hills

Ellie is proof that the worst thing about anime is anime fans. Also, this means Ellie has never seen the god-tier dub of Ghost Stories, huh?

Jariah Synn

I saw that breakdown coming 😅
