I don’t know, I guess I’m shocked that a few years difference might make a difference in anyone’s mind? We’re still talking about someone who hasn’t even finished fully developing in body or mind… I’d think that there would be even normal adults who would break mentally under that kind of pressure and revert to some more childish tendencies. idk I guess that there are protagonists in this genre that are 15-17 and are total badasses, so maybe there’s disconnect there? I’m don’t know. If I’m here having to over explain or defend the writing to the people who enjoy the story enough to pay for it, then it’s likely not written well enough. I’ll need to take a look at it again before it goes on RR and make sure his age is clear and maybe lay off of the Alex dependency a bit. But either way, he’s not like this for more than 5-10 more chapters.

Oh thanks lmao. Yeah I don't write but that's me in a perpetual state of 'blergh'. I will say in regards to your future plans you'll probably get some huffy responses in regards to more 'supporting' character screen time. At least from the stories I've read on RR a lot of folk out there don't like focus/PoV shifting off the protagonist. Still, good luck author dude

Rip Woodham

Oof 17.... I think his and Alex's interactions are written like he's around 10... I'd say younger if he wasn't traumatized... you see others saying 10 and 12 here in the comments... that's why I said I found it creepy the other day lol. Anyway, yeah just some disconnect there. :) Old man syndrome, got it!

This is solid feedback! I've struggled to show Sam as his own character up to now, especially with the chapters already being 3k+ in length and the general speed of those last ten chapters. I'll see what I can do to remedy that before they go on Royal Road. As a bit of a spoiler, I want all of the main party people (Mark, Sarah, Olivia, Sam, Jonathan) to become powerful and have names in their own right. I fully plan for them to go away from the party at certain points and gain their own reputation in the world. I love shows like Seven Deadly Sins or Fairy Tale, where the people have almost their own adventures and people in different parts of the world know each of them. This is a series objective of mine, and Book 2 has a pretty heavy emphasis on Sam gaining his confidence and becoming very sought after throughout the US (makes sense with him being such a high-level person and a healer to boot). Again, thanks for the feedback!

OverXelous

Sam was 15 when he entered the Rifts, so he's likely closer to 17 now. He's definitely a young adult, but he entered as a young teen and has mannerisms closer to a pound puppy than a functioning young adult you might see in a normal American high school. I'll also add that I have a younger brother with a massssive age gap between us. He's around this age, and seeing him interact with his little high school friends, it's hard for me to imagine them even living through this sort of a scenario. And if they did, it would likely be worse off than Sam is now. I hate to sound like an old guy complaining about the younger generation, but they're all extremely good athletes, and sweet Jesus, half of them don't know what to do without a phone in their hand or getting Chick-fil-A every other day. It is something closer to a teen with abusive parents, but in a situation where the parent actually doesn't care or have to take care of said child outside of getting their money's worth out of them. You don't need to be concerned about bruises or rest; just enough time to regain mana and heal more people for profit.

I dont necessarily agree, but I get it. Although we've seen from his perspective, he feels like a sort of party npc. Now rescued, doesn't influence the plot themselves except as an accessory to the hero. No complications, full loyalty, and provides healbot capabilities. It hit harder in this chapter because of the "Main character has immediate need to address the massive issues from being gone, but Sam.. Is just cool to fall asleep and has nobody who cares they are not dead." It stretches belief and casts the previous complete acceptance of the MC in the light of less a stylistic choice of portraying a traumatized kid, and more as a complication-free party NPC. At least.. Thats my read.

Afrisan

I feel like the spacial pouch should be mentioned more btw, keep feeling like you’re forgetting it. Times when I’d expect him to store stuff in it he just holds on to them, when it’s so convenient and powerful

John

Christ above that's an out of pocket take. Isn't Sam like 12? Prison bitch does not feel appropriate. Personally I think he's written pretty well as a traumatized child who latched onto the first kind person he found and is now terrified of people. I imagine he's interactions with Mark and especially Sarah will emphasis these character traits, but I like the direction his character is going in. The fact he's a high level healer and he's background as a slave will serve as both a justification and motivation for him to continue delving with Alex.

Rip Woodham

Soooo... I kinda feel like a little like others said... we aren't in the story, so when Sam (and Val imo) get brought up, it's just these same mannerisms and behaviors that get mentioned. They are supposed to pull at heart strings but it doesn't hit like that for some readers, then what does that leave, it can just get old or repetitive. Some might get annoyed because the MC never even questions giving them something when they would, or because they're not interesting or compelling to them so they're just a drag on the story. Imo these characters need to change & grow up faster than might be realistic. Sam.... I thought he was older when he was introduced. I had this image of a young adult, not a preteen, which definitely made it weird. How old is he? I must have missed that. And it didn't feel natural how he just slotted into Alex's life without development, discussion, thoughts etc. It's like "this is how it is now" but for some people it's like some steps were missed, there. I think I need to reread the parts with Sam, and that will probably help my feelings on him. I personally enjoyed this chapter a lot, looking forward to them again now. :)

OverXelous

That makes sense, and he won't stay like that for long. Thanks for your feedback! Like I said, I don't expect everyone to love all the characters. Hopefully he'll grow on you some more in Book 2 :) PS - I really like your profile picture, feel like that's me in a nutshell when writing, lol.

BubblyGhost

I also don't really like him, as a character at least. I just don't like people who leech, emotionally or otherwise. Don't get me wrong it's not unrealistic, and in a real life scenario not their fault; it's just that me personally I don't enjoy reading characters who have no motivation and are there just as a burden, essentially acting like a kicked puppy the entire time.

Alex

Totally DIsagree with Jon on Sams likability. Actually it is very relatable char that was clearly damaged and is going though tuff times. The mental trauma aspects are hard to relate to and thus many are clueless or missunderstand the severity of this condition. Also, Sams potential growth and importance to MC is obvious. This situation almost reminds me of rescuing of hurt puppy that can grow into a loyal friend and a guard dog but also can become brittle and angry and snap on everyone. Care and help and support are good human qualities to have and nurture especially these days. Good writing!!

small_brain_boy

I think pants of some sort should be the first step unless he DID grab the and just hasn't yet wrapped himself lol

Jon

It's over the top in my opinion, if it was just him flinching when people got near or raised their voices it's one thing, but you have him holding Alex's sleeve

Theo Exall

I disagree with Jon. He is and will be traumatized. I look forward to how his character grows

aaab1422

Mark is about to ask Alex to take a seat.

aaab1422

I massively disagree. I think Sam has been a very realistic depiction of what would happen to a 10 year old in this scenario and also a character that is very easy to sympathize with.

OverXelous

That's kind of a wild take. Do you mind elaborating for me? Maybe it's the way that I'm writing him that annoys you, rather than his character or what has happened to him? I mean, he's a teenager who got stranded, chained up, and emotionally and physically abused pretty much daily for over a year; the fact that he's even semi-functional seems almost unrealistic to me. EDIT: Also, not liking him is totally fine. The story will have quite a few characters, and I anticipate that people won't like all of them. But yeah, I'm more shocked about the idea that a timid and scarred teen reminds you of a "prison bitch." This description might truly not be far off, but I'm asking the questions above to try and figure out why that annoys you.

Jon

Not gonna lie I really don't care for sam at all. The more you write him the more I'm reminded of someones prison bitch and it's honestly annoying

OverXelous

"eyes were like miniature cosmos. The sclera was white like a normal eye, but the iris was outlined in bright gold, while the center was colored black and had small spots of gold. The pupil itself was a starburst of yellow and orange" You're right, though; it might be worth having him focus on the way that the eye looks a bit here as he's looking at himself in the mirror.

Brioche

What does the eye look like again? I feel like it was only described like once, quite a while ago too.

small_brain_boy

AWW DANG IT! Now I gotta wait again... Terrible decision to shower at the moment lol

Beeees!

I guess Alex has found a frontline fighter to help him out

ReadingObsessed

Or he got initiated

Jeremy M

Looks like Alex isn't the only one keeping secrets
