Dennis Hornsby

I feel like, as a first chapter to a book, this doesn't really work. As the 61st chapter in a web novel, it does, but going straight into the fight without explaining anything gave me some whiplash and I know what's going on

The Human

Both an issue narratively for our Mc I mean but also like, an issue plothole wise. There's just no real way around having them be in your story but not the consuming focus of your story, and it doesn't feel like you want to make this story 'Mc finds an epic rift and camps there forever, only returning to bring his two best friends and romantic interest back with him, abandoning earth except when someone comes to fetch him to rescue a crisis'

The Human

Really enjoying the story, and thanks! I'm worried the time dilation is going to become an issue though. Especially with him selling the access to the rift, which, might be a problem because elements of the guild or whoever could go in and pick the shadow side of the conflict, it's also a huge opportunity cost for ever moment spent on earth and not at 8x speed.

Rip Woodham

I think that'd be good. As for it not needing explanation idk. I think the more common reason in these types of stories is keeping your cards close to your chest. Hiding just to hide. And his scars aren't a bad look, makes him more a veteran, and his eye makes him look more like a god. So not a bad reaction here probably. ;) I understand him not wanting to flaunt it but I think others would.

That's fair, and if it needs to be stated more clearly I can try to find a place to do that. Though, to be honest I didn't think it really needed to be said. I would think that most people would have this same thought process, unless their motivations are leaning way more toward "I'm going to be the most powerful or badass and don't care what others think" but Alex hasn't really demonstrated that. I can see how his behavior his coming off has suave, and maybe should have there be a thought here or there about how he thinks others are viewing him. And potentially a bit more elaboration on why he was hiding his face in the first place at the end of Volume 1, since there's really not a ton of room here to do it before the fight. Except for maybe a quick thought before he walks out to start the fight.

Rip Woodham

That makes sense to me and that's fine imo but I was annoyed reading it tbh. That being the motivation and him feeling strongly about it isn't obvious I think. You're painting him as pretty suave with things now, at least that's how it comes off to me, and his friends who are the only ones that saw it didn't have a bad reaction to it and almost nothing was made of it.

I mean he's been back in normal society for like less than two weeks at this point. I feel like having a scarred-up face and an alien looking eye would take a bit of adjustment. While he's gained a good bit of combat confidence and assurance in himself, I don't feel like that totally translates to social confidence. So yeah, I feel like two things are warring with each other here in a person's motivation. } 1. Alex, like 99% of society, wants to fit in with his peers and have people think he's good or great. No one wants to be alienated or seen as a freak. I feel like it takes a strong sense of self or a goal that someone cares about MORE than the possibility as being seen as an outcast, to push through that kind of innate fear of fitting in. In this moment, he doesn't have either. (See reason #2) 2. While Alex wants to win this tournament and beat Rylan, he thinks that it's all but in the bag. He has come back stronger than almost everyone else, with actual training and real combat experience. In his ignorance or overconfidence in his combat ability, he thinks that he does not need his eye (or Valtherion) to win this fight. Would he be bummed if he lost? Yes, but I don't think he'd be crushed. So, I don't feel like this desire to beat Rylan and win a tournament on short notice outweighs his natural desire to fit in or "be cool". All of that to say, this changes in only a few chapters when he DOES get a goal to him that's worth no longer caring about hiding his eye and scar or fitting in. Sorry it frustrates you, but I do feel like this is pretty realistic for his character and most people's general motivation. But yeah- I wanted that thought process and a scene for him to actually think through his reasons from wanting to appear normal and fit in and weight that against his goals with his friends and moving forward. When he does actually put some thought in to it, he realizes it's not worth sacrificing the advantage or "who he is" now that he's begun to change. Sorry for the long-winded response! I hope that all makes sense though!

yes

You're talking about his eye?

Jon

His insistence to consistently not use what is a physical part of his body is by far the most annoying trait of your main character

Nice! Love the chappy and the obligatory, MC gaff, Im strong AF don't need to take this too seriously shtick. I thought Alex had already had that moment in the sect but I guess he's definitely had it now. I hope he doesn't slack off and continues to train madly.
