Actually, I didn't mind how simple his backstory was, as it is quite relatable and have experienced guilt like this too in my childhood! Replying to OverXelous

To be fair I like that's Sam's backstory is more typical teenage drama. But if Sam was 16 before the Rift, I can see a lot of Child Protective Services drama because of all of this. While I am glad it's not dark. I do think you should have maybe a chapter or two devoted to the blowback of Sam not confronting the issue earlier as well as how the Government is going to respond. Since Sam has a talent for healing. And his Parents might be more interested in him being a Healer for the Hunters than the Adventurers

I was of course expecting something dark and it turned out it was nothing, so it was underwhelming. But I wasn't disappointed, if that makes sense. I like this fine. You didn't have anything riding on it being dark and this is realistic and wholesome imo.

This gets addressed in a chapter or two!

I can understand that, Roy. It just felt the most "real" of all the options. It definitely could have been an orphan situation or something darker like his parents threw him in the Rift- I did consider those. But it felt way more real to have it play out something like this, and that a young kid (especially when you meet his mother this should make a bit more sense too) is worried more about his parents being angry at him for being foolish, than realizing that they'll just be relieved he's alive and to have him home. To Alex and most readers who are mature, this probably seems silly. But watching my younger siblings make some decisions without the life experience I have, I often find myself wondering what's going through their minds, lol!

Thanks for the feedback, Aaab. I saw your comment on the last few chapters about Sam and was curious to know what you thought!

I think a lot of stories like relying on dark backstories to add easy conflict which is why people who read a lot immediately assume the worst when even a small hint of darkness occurs in a story, I know i do. though I wouldn't say I'm shocked I'm more releaved sam is just a normal teenager.

Roy Robinson

It was more tame than I expected. His reluctance to address it felt like it was going to be darker than just embarrassment

Is Sarah even eligible? I imagine she’s signed up on the app but she’s not an AG member right? Wouldn’t the HA have an issue with this?

Beeees!

It was surprising on some level, but the vibe I got is it was one of those things that kinda kept growing as he waited longer and it's feeling way to big in his teenager brain at this point. I guess the real answer will be to see how it all shakes out once they are reunited.

What did you think about his back story? I feel like some of the Beta Readers were shocked, some weren't. I think a lot of people in comments were thinking Sam's story was really dark with potentially abusive parents. (to be fair, Alex and them were thinking this as well) But it's a bit more mundane than that, just a teenager doing teenager things. And I feel like feelings of guilt and one of those things like the longer it goes, the more guilty he feels for not reaching out to them.

Poor Sam, really is about time to let his parents know he's okay. I can't imagine his parents being okay with him running off and getting in danger, but he is definitely not the same boy he ran away as. Coming back as a young man will certainly change the dynamics even if he still looks mostly the same, though I bet he has changed in appearance from whatever body stats he has gotten while leveling
