A new video, reward heads up, and general update
🕑 Added 2016-07-31 13:24:58 +0000 UTC Three things...1) Have a new episode! It's about health systems, and how they change how a game can feel. It doesn't have a name, description, subtitles or a thumbnail and I will probably release it to the world tomorrow... but you might as well have it now! Lemme know what you think
2) Patreon rewards might be a tiny bit delayed. Newsletter, reading list, and Playlist will either come today or in the first few days of August. Apologies for the delay.
3) That's because I have been working non-stop on video stuff and I just need a break this weekend. Between Boss Keys, normal episodes, work, real life stuff, travel, and a new gig I am feeling a bit beat. I was quite stressed out making the above video, constantly worried that I wouldn't finish it in July and stressing the hell out.
Which isn't fun! The amazing thing about GMT is that I love it, and my crazy passion for it pushes me to research for hours, spend days making a little Spelunky man run about the screen, and track down a game and figure out how to capture it just so I can show 5 seconds of footage.
So I don't want to ruin that! And all that means is that I'm going to take it a little more slow for a while, especially while I'm cranking through Boss Keys, and might not get to two episodes of GMT a month.
Anyway, hope you understand. Any questions, just ask!

That's Hyper Light Drifter. Grand game, may talk about it more, soon...

What's the pixel game at the very end that fades out under the top tier contributors?

Thanks, but I feel like I must keep my promise that spin off shows will be free. It's cool, I'm going to do one BK a month and I'm already feeling much happier with the arrangement :D

You should charge for the Boss Keys instead, everyone loves it.
Your volume of work is incredible as is, Mark. Don't overdo it!

That's awesome that Cool Ghosts is a top patron.
Glad you mentioned Dark Souls, but I think even more interesting is Bloodborne. Trading health for ammo on your pistol forces you to make a really important gameplay decision. And that's what we're talking about here, right? Behind every interesting health system in a game is an equally interesting gameplay decision that has to be made. Regen'ing health encourages us to play more aggressive - just like the Bloodborne's "regain" system encourages players to play aggressively and get some health back.

Great video. Forgot to mention Link's more powerful ranged attack in the original Legend of Zelda when he has full hearts...

Speaking of the video: Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver also had somewhat different gameplay depending on health status. Raziel can use the titular weapon extending out from his arm when the health is full.

Don't worry Mark. Even though we love your content we don't want it at the cost of your happiness, sanity and/or the quality of the content. You're doing a great work here. I for one prefer quality over quantity. Cheers!
Don't sweat it =). You're not willing to sacrifice quality, which is what we like to hear.
