Jon, I dont play many games anymore either...and I even live off animating pixelart for games!. dunno if you grew up in the NES era but I did, and I found Rainworld to be quite intriguing, the same kind of difficulty of NES era but whitout as much repetition (I suggested it for this vote) maybe try that out? :p

Hi Mark, signed up to your Patreon today to take part in the future GameClubs. About a year ago my interest in playing games completely collapsed, though I still like reading and learning about them. I'm hoping that taking part in the GameClub might rekindle my interest. Despite losing the enjoyment I had of them, I still feel like I'm missing my old hobby. Will be looking forward to the next GameClub to see if it gives me a new way of enjoying them. Thanks for the great videos.

That sounds like a good idea - I'll look into this in future

Fantastic write up and the Game Club is a great way to finally set some time aside for these titles as well as having a meaningful discussion. But instead of Patreon's comment section, how about our own discord server with a chatroom dedicated towards the current Game Club? You can link the discord server directly with Patreon. Super Eyepatch Wolf did this and it worked great.

I think it's a good idea to discuss things as we go through the game, but there were a lot of people who did not have much time to play the game through and only beat a handful of levels. I know I might not be able to participate in the discussion on the first week or so, and it seems like many others wouldn't be ready too. I did try to structuralise (is that correct?) my thoughts, though. After each of my sessions (at least an hour long) I wrote in-depth notes about the segment I've just played. Still, that resulted in a 5 page document, and it's hard to fit it all in a single comment. I mean, would people even like to read long comments going into details? Or would they rather like to share general condensed opinions?

This was great Mark, hope you'll do more. Some people had some crazy good insight about some parts of the game, and it's nice to see it all put together in this post. The result is the kind of review you wouldn't be able to get with just one or two brains involved.

This comment is the first time in my life I've ever even had a thought of taking notes while playing a game, thanks for that :D

Thanks so much for hosting this mark! I've never taken notes on a game while I was playing it, what good fun. I generally dislike the way people compartmentalize "story" and "gameplay" and "visuals" as like, discrete things that just happen to be living in the same computer program. They all enforce each other and are part of the same thing. But maybe sort of splitting the conversation up into individual threads would help get people to think more detail-orientedly and help organize discussion. You could maybe do something more general like "General Impressions" "specific examples" and "Nitpicky details" so it's organized on a scale of high magnitude to highly specific thoughts. I definitely had picked out a few small things (like the kid who's designed to look like a cobra) that I felt didn't have a home in the discussion cause they were so focused on one small part of the game. Thank you again though this was rad!

I thought this worked out well. I liked your summary with quotes from us. You DID provide a handful of points to consider at the kickoff, but maybe you could signpost those more as specific questions to guide the discussion. Though some might find that too constraining. Anyway, I'm glad this happened and I was finally forced to play this game. Thanks!

Thanks for the write up, Mark! I had a lot of fun playing and reading everyone's comments. I have a few suggestions for how things could be done in the future that would facilitate more and hopefully better discussion and work better into people's schedules. Maybe other people would agree? I follow a podcast (Dev Game Club) where they play a game over the course of about a month (and encourage listeners to play along with them), but only play a section of 2-5 hours per week. Having the game broken up piecemeal like this has certain advantages. You can focus better on specifics of the game as they happen. For instance in the beginning you can see how effective the intro is at teaching you the mechanics and pulling you into the story, how it's setting up your expectations and what predictions you may have about how the story advances. Or maybe what you'd like to see in terms of systems progression. This also help compartmentalize the nitty gritty stuff that can grind on peoples' nerves. For instance if we had already established on week one or two that the platforming was a little suspect then it would take up less discussion (if any) in future weeks freeing up time and effort for more things like the representation of psychological disorders. I realize having weekly stop points may be more frequent than some people like (the folks who like to play it all through in a session or 2). I personally like it a lot better broken up into smaller chunks. I t makes it easier to put aside time to play and the regular weekly-ness of it keeps me on task so I don't forget to play/procrastinate and then have to play the whole game right at the end of the month (like I did this month! Whoopsa!) I realize, also, that this would be more work for you, Mark, having a weekly post and maybe discussion topics or anything else you'd want to have so that's another thing to consider. Anyways, I had a blast playing Psychonauts with y'all and I'm excited to see what's next for the Game Club!

Though I did not contribute anything to the final thoughts ( haven't got enough time to play more than 2-3 hours ) I really enjoyed the summary and the initiative as a whole. Pretty sure I would like to participate in the next one ( and will definately spend more time on the game :P ). Great insight everyone! Waiting for more ;)
