"I then made the text in Photoshop and saved a bunch of images where each picture has one more letter of the text visible. 50 images later and I could turn it into an image sequence, run it at half speed, and plop it over the empty text box." That would be way less tedious to animate in After Effects since you can animate text character by character.

I was sitting in class talking to my friends, saying "How does he make this diagramatic stuff look so good!" Now I have my answers :) Cheers for your awesome work Mark, I look forward to each new episode.

yeeeeeeeeees this is the good stuff! I think the Skyward Sword video is the best video you've done. So much effort into the production, the script is incredibly tight, and you tackle all aspects of the dungeons with a level-head. Honestly this video is nothing short of inspiring. There is so much to dig into in this post, I'm gonna try a few things for myself for funsies. Honestly, if there was a patreon tier-level with more of these kind of posts, I would be all up in it. Thanks so much for all the effort you go to Mark.

This reminds me how much I REALLY have to upgrade my Adobe suite. I'm still on 5.5!

Looks nice! For saving presets, just right select some effects on a clip, right click and save as preset. Now you can drag and drop onto other clips just like any other effect. I have loads set up for GTMK like wipes, flickering, drawing circles, and fixing various colour / scale issues on old game footage.

I actually didn't mind the accidental post because it was, as said, an accident. No matter what, I did notice every detail you made. I enjoyed from the already familiar graphs to the 3D models and jokes. It felt like you're not stagnant about the show's design, and it keeps getting better with new ideas you come up, on top of the old ones. It feel like a fresh and evolving show. Thanks for detailing the process of making these AWESOME vids, Mark. Keep up the marvelous work!

This is really helpful and I'm glad to finally know that you didn't just use photoshop magic for those crazy 3D animations. About effect presets. How exactly do I save those? For instance, when I'm using a bunch of effects to better showcase 4:3 footage, I always do the first one manually and then copy the effects onto everything else. But just having fixed presets from various projects would save me some time. And I really need to finally learn the vector tool. Only used some random technique for flat design to show stacks of game cases and that was pain to get done (probably 2-3 hours) http://i.imgur.com/4V1yHp5.jpg

This timed exclusive really wasn't necessary but it was a fascinating read :) The Zelda 1 'dungeon as a whole' video was really impressive, especially as it was just for a few seconds

I just never want to break promises / take anyone for granted. I appreciate everyone on here so much that I'd never want to be seen as taking the mickey!

Kevin Vognar

I'm not a stickler for exclusivity, so I don't feel like you need to apologize for letting the video leak early. I'm just happy to see it! :)

Oh sorry, I asked a friend to make the model. I then textured it. I know a very, very small amount about 3D rendering - it's something I'd like to learn but I just don't think it would be that useful right now. Should be learning After Effects!

Gabriel Henrique Dalposso

Sorry, I didn't quite got it... Did you make the 3d models or asked someone to do it? If you did, where did you learned to do it?? I'm trying to for months and can't do anything like this!

Game Maker's Toolkit

I'm not sure if you mean for Zelda or Boss Keys, but either way the answer is no. I really enjoy doing this project because I'm just personally fascinated by the topic and love learning more about it. I'll admit I was getting a little bored of saying the same thing in each episode from WW to Spirit Tracks - "dungeons are pretty simple!" - but Skyward Sword really brought my enthusiasm back. I mean, I've already started playing ALBW so I'm definitely not burnt out!

Tommy Cifelli

It's crazy how far GMTK/BK has come since the original. From just gameplay footage to full-on motion graphics work, it's truly impressive. Well done!

Game Maker's Toolkit

Pretty much! Skykeep is just impossible. I didn't even try.

Have you lost any enthusiasm for this series as it's gone on? Or are they quite spread apart that they feel fresh when you come back to it? Or do you wait to do them until you are enthusiastic?

Alex

How can you tell if a Zelda dungeon is legit? Easy, the more destroyed and nonsensical Mark's graphs are.
