How to Run a Game Jam (Insider, Sep 2018)

I'm sure that with each passing year you'll refine the GMTK game jam, so far it really feels like one of the biggest game jams out there and i'm happy to see it grow, can't wait for next year. This time around the jam absolutely helped me understand a few concepts, specially how important it is to have someone in charge of the actual game desing for teams of more than 2. Now I know better that even if everyone involved helps with the design there must be one person in charge of concentraiting all efforts into a clear and defined idea with tasks and objectives in order for no time to be lost. And what helped me understand this is that for our game we made it look really good for a jam and sound nice as well, but could have worked more on polishing the actual game feel to make it less confusing for the player. The work you've done and continue to make for the gaming community is amazing, and this jam is the best example of it. I hope you keep enjoying, working and expanding upon your community and work for years ^v^

Having made and published a game before, I feel that two days to make a game, even a prototype, is way too rushed. Three days would allow for exponentially more creative and well-thought out design (and adding even more time would only further help matters). This is the main reason I didn't participate in the jam.

I definitely would love to see this post made public - one of my friends is on the local Game Dev Co-Op board and this info would be super useful to them.

You were only supposed to work for 2 days last year - hence the confusion :P

The list on itch.io is randomised, so games don't rise to the top. And I play games on the stream that are submitted, so I know the devs are watching

I would like to know why you decided to make this jam 2 days long instead of 3 like last year. Also, sad to hear you have a girl, I wanted to be your man :(

Definitely need a better judging system, not sure the best way to make it work though. If a good game is low in the list, very few will play it even if it's great and it won't stand a chance once a few front runners start stealing the show. Maybe if your streams highlighting games picked random ones, or ones with fewer ratings that would help? Regardless, it was a great jam and I can't wait to do it again next year!

Got to participate in the game jam (my first) and the community was amazing. Unfortunately I was unable to submit a finished project due to time commitments but I finished the core mechanics over the next couple days. It was so much fun and I learned a lot! Hopefully I have time to keep participating after starting my job.

You'll still be able to make art and music, it just won't be so strict on what art you can use. I'll keep thinking on this rule change though - thanks for the feedback

"To make things clearer next year I think I’m just going to remove all restrictions on art and music. The jam is about design, after all, and I don’t really care if you made the graphics that weekend. I just want to know if your game is fun and interesting." I understand the point you are going for here, but for a lot of people doing the art and finding someone to do music is part of the fun. I spent the jam bouncing between teams of people I've never met before doing bits and pieces of art for their games and I had a blast. I understand you can't please everyone, and you are trying to find a format the works for you, I just hope you really consider all the implications if you do end up putting such a big rule change in. This jam was awesome, I know from the Discord that so many people had an amazing time. I am looking forward to the next one, whatever it may look like.

Yep! Video on the best games will be out sometime this month

Are you going to do a video highlighting some cool entries? Havn't really followed the stuff around the jam because I don't really have any dev skills, but that would be fun.
