Fantastic read. I would never tell someone how to run their channel, but can say that I am fine with quality over sheer numbers. That's why I'm a patron, to support the unique effor you bring into your work.

Tomas Gimenez

You rock man! Can't wait to see your 2021 content. Take your time though. Quality over quantity is the best approach :)

Paul Andrei

I really hope you can make a new series like Boss Keys, that's the series that brought me to your channel. I also really like Design Icons and I'm sad to see that it underperformed so much, maybe you can work your magic and make it work :) Happy new year and best of luck in 2021!

As a fellow YouTube person, incorrect pronunciation always bugs me more as a maker than a viewer. It's no sweat.

Paolo Torelli

As someone whose disability prevented him from going past level 3, I nod in agreement of this

best for everyone for 2021. shout out to the mothly reading lists and what im playing videos, as its great to get your input on current games and games we might want to check out along side the longer form videos on the youtube (the reason why I subscribe here). Also if you ever want to do a video on local game dev scenes Mark, then let us know, I'm at the games hub in bristol for example

Graham Tattersall

Great job this year Mark and thanks for the year breakdown! Looking forward to what's in store for the channel next year.

Great post. I especially love that you're not promoting games that have exploitative practices, and also that making an effort to inform your community on other shady business practices like crunch.

Tom Stuart

Super interesting. Congratulations on a great year. Excited to see what you get up to in 2021 — as a patron I’d choose quality over quantity any day.

"Avoid promoting game design that is unnecessarily exclusionary, such as not having difficulty settings"...I can't help thinking back to the video on roguelikes from earlier this year. It's no secret that you love Spelunky (I do too), and that game is extremely difficult with no way to adjust the difficulty downward. Not saying it's a bad thing, but in that video you do lean heavily toward the design of roguelikes such as Spelunky with a static difficulty.

Congrats on a great year and I like that you've spelled out your goals for next year. There's nothing like publishing them to help keep you accountable! They're all admirable goals but I feel the Responsible category needs some tweaking to meet the clarity and quality of the others. Eg. Not covering a game because it targets a niche audience that likes difficult games contradicts being inclusive of all gamers (and there are likely valuable lessons like "do lives still matter" to be gleaned). You don't want to promote loot boxes, but you're happy just to "mention" that games were made under crunch conditions? I feel like there's a double standard here where you're happy to boycott praying on players but only a little miffed about praying on developers. I'm nitpicking at these only because I know you strive for quality (which has got you this great following this far) and these feel like the weakest links in an otherwise top list of goals. Have a great holiday season, rest up and I look forward to seeing what you come up with next year! Best wishes, from a happy Patreon!

I always learn a ton from your posts and content, and these posts that talk about the "behind the scenes" is really helpful for someone who creates as well - the principles you've drawn up and the focus on quality has inspired me to do something similar for next year as well. Thanks for sharing so much of yourself with us this year and totally okay if we don't see you as often in 2021 - with the principles you have in place, it sounds like doing what you want will lead you to even greater videos :)

Really fascinating stuff here, Mark. You've been my favorite YT creator for years now, and this post highlights why. I'm especially excited by the goals you're setting for yourself. As a dev who's been doing this for a quarter-century I'm heavily invested in seeing the medium pushed forward in the ways you are advocating. I've worked in several organizations to increase diversity in the industry, and I've used your videos to help push the little start up I'm at currently to take accessibility seriously. (No small feat when you're little and scrappy and every dev minute counts!) Thanks again for all you're doing!

Swolomo

I’m surprised the Shovel Knight video didn’t perform very well. I really loved it, sad it didn’t. It stood out to me as one of your best this year!

Parachuting Turtle

I like those principles.

Alexander Lisovsky

I found your awesome channel this year (don't quite remember how, i think it was a video on how gamers optimize the fun out of a game), and i'm still slowly watching your older videos and loving it. Great job and keep up the good work you are doing! Especially on accessibility videos and more broad philosophical design themes.

Eduardo Gallardo

I like you care about the value you provide us but I would say I am not the only one that thinks quality is a better measure of my contribution than quantity so I am ok with less videos but better ones, you can always do a poll on here to see how all of us feel about it, I'm just exited for more good videos on 2021!

"And then, the second I hit the million subscriber milestone… I lost all interest. Seriously: just vanished. Poof. Gone. In an instant. It was weird." Interestingly, on the Abroad in Japan podcast last week with The Anime Man as a guest they both said pretty much the same.

Andreas

Congrats on another great year, and I look forward to 2021.
