Some of the things you discussed are definitely going to make their way into the story. They already have a warp drive (Alcubierre drive) for FTL travel, the hypergates which will get covered more later in the story, and sublight engines, while fast, have a theoretical max limit based on the type of propulsion used, and the ship they are attached to. As the story grows, there will certainly be other technologies that will be introduced. That's all I'll say about that.

Sry for the writing mistakes, I was typing on my smartphone and the autocorrect to my language was not disabled. (Tip: lots of stuff in star trek is based on theoretical possible stuff, just not the Star-Trek stuff that goes to much into the Star-Trek future, thats where they totally messed it up) The teleporter would need also a re-materialicing horizon or at least a platform and a roof part, but your gates could work like that) problem is still our wormhole piercer ship.... Also with Anti-Matter it would not be possible. You would have to convert all the matter in the galaxy, turn it to energy and than maybe you could get a needle like wormhole. (And yes it is possible to convert matter to energy and also reverse it, but not 1 to 1, you always have some losses while converting)

About engines, the speed limit is always the limit how fast the used particel in the engine can travel, the max. speed is limited with this. So if you go into details keep that in mind. You can work with quantum engines for smaller battery systems that never die. Also the gates could work like a teleporter based on the system of Star-Trek but needs also a gate at the end for re-materialicing. And the data communication between the gates works with quantum-comumication while coupling massive amounts together between the gates. Wormholes would need too much energy to even establish. Warp-engines probably work only get you to almost light speed but not faster. Yea... I liked the warp theory but about 3 months ago they told us that it is possible in theory but not faster than light. For plasma engines or ionic engines they only go maximal about 40.000 metres per second. So you need 145 days to reach the end of our sun-system. So if you can generate some ultra-super-duper energy generator, far better than fusion you can get these stuff theoretically done. But engines are still a problem. Also with a teleporter you could basically generate matter out of energy and data. ( Idea for 3d-printer 2.0?) Called replicator in star-trek. You can convert energy to matter and reverse it. Problem is to safe that data you would need a "buffer" like a "ram" from your computer just Soo much more bigger than all the ram that exists on earth. A teleporter could transfer the data with quantum coupling data to the other gate and with a massiv energy source rebuild the matter again. You can do a lot of stuff with that, but it still does not solve your traveling problem with the engines. With FTL and non FTL. Because a warp-drive that goes let's say as fast as light does not look and work like your described engines. So what can you do. First: for a energy generating option you can go to Anti-Matter energy generators instead of fusion technology. Theoretically there you have a whole set of a new inverted period-system you can work with... Now we need a bit of fantasy: combination of that new Anti-Matter period-system could give you new options to work with for your FTL-System and your normal Engine-design. But remember you have to contain the Anti-Matter in a electromagnetic force field, if it reacts with matter..... Let's say a lot of energy gets set free. I hope I could help you with ideas.

In Sci-Fi Storys/movies and evertyhing else they always find a somehow exotic Material with special properties that they use in combination with others to make things possible. Most of the time they get a ultimative enegry source with it. They do that because otherwise it is not possible to get the energy needed for the Sci-Fi stuff. Fusion enegry is good, but to open a so calles wormhole eaven if theoretical possible would need about the mass of our whole galaxy turned into energy to work with. Gravitation waves where time and space gets bend need 2 Black holes to collide, or neuron Stars. Lots of stuff is theoretisch mathematical possible. But we wont start thinking of how to do it if we know there is no way to Generale that energy we would need for it.

melchi

Or maybe set up some kind of optics on a planet as close to the sun as mercury .like they did in roche world to focus the beam of light in a straight line .

melchi

I forget but wasn't one of the problems with the system how much ionizing radiation the blue dwarf have off? Maybe they could use that to their advantage. Like someone has to stay in the shadow of the planet to avoid getting the ship exposed to too much radiation. It could limit the route someone could attack from.

Gabriel Melnik

I'd trust him specially after he revealed what he did.

melchi

Decompiling... That is the term that is missing. Wouldn't it be such a cheat if Alex could read machine language like a coder reads high level code? It would probably be infuriating to be able to see the inefficient use to memory and processor time and memory leaks like reading a book.

melchi

It might be that just taking advantage of the vacuum of space was the last piece they needed to make it produce more energy than it costs. After all, making plasma requires using high vacuum.

Aclys

I do love alex getting his robot crafting gear-up scheme going, but I do also hope to see more of him being a dad. The playset was great, but gotta raise the munchkin too.

Aclys

well he was not redesigning whole new engines, just making repairs to existing engine designs, the improvements came from some benefit gained by his refinement of making the parts using his particular printer setup, which the software apparently doesnt stop. Plus it would make sense that the scavenger he got that software from would have stuff that doesnt come with malware

Theo Q.

I didn't really understand the difference between the two engines. But maybe I just need to reread it. Also, it would have been funny if fusion was commercially viable in 30 years. :p

BarrettSlayer

So what all did he run through that program back on the station? I figure that’s part of the reason Omni was fully aware rather then just the patent but he did use it for other things right?

Fortunis

Interesting. Spy/malware disguised as a tech simulation program. Sounds like Alexander needs to up his coding game. Because I wouldn't trust Lucas with potential access to my design library. Especially after what he just revealed. I'm looking forward to seeing just how bad ass this engine is.

ShadeByTheSea

I like the balance, not too detailed but not glossing everything over. Like I really don't need to know why every valve is different kind of thing.

mmarkgraf212

That's why the bounty is for Lucas alive. They want him to continuously pump out new shitware when the old stuff gets flagged.

Gabriel Melnik

Also I have a massive pet peeve with how the software industry works in the future given that access to the source code in this day an age is something mostly found in Open Source projects, and if the software doesn't work as it should, it gets forgotten pretty quickly, making it detrimental to corporate espionage. Just think of it this way, if Photoshop made your photos shit in order to prevent you from making good photos, you would stop using the program on a heartbeat. TL DR: if the program doesn't solve a problem, and instead makes them, it will be flagged as spyware/shitware it won't get user data because the user won't use the software

Armo

Ah, so Lucas is one of them ‘I will decompile and reverse-engineer your application if I have to’ programmers. Is this the mythical 10x programmer in action? Thank you for the chapter!

Scott Hamilton

Honestly love all the exposition, it's what makes all the crafting/building type novels really enjoyable for me, rather than I created this amazing thing better than anyone else just cause I'm gifted. It shows his thought process and let's the reader know why he is good at what he is doing, which makes it more enjoyable and shows that you as a writer care about the story. Keep up the amazing work, looking forward to the next chapter

Gabriel Melnik

I'd love some documentation on the theoretical engines that you are taking inspiration from.

John Doe
