Hammy

That is also a very good point if he is dead set on working with pirates.

Vanessa S.

Agreed. What he should do is offer those activation crystals to the Charr in a trade. They want ships and he just so happens to have what they need to get five.

Hammy

That makes more sense now in regards to Char Group as I did not know about that change. I get what you say about home built ships, and for the most part agree. But I would argue he could build a drone swarm style ship similar to his repair bots. Have a slightly bigger one with the super computer that is in charge of what is essentially guns with engines. He already has the base concept work down, it just expanding on that. With no crew no need for grav plates, and since they only meant for system defense he does not need FTL. He already needs to spend a super computer per ship anyway so it not really a loss. Again enjoying the story so far but I think he is ignoring some alternatives.

I forgot to mention one thing, this whole plan of his makes more sense with the changes I made to Char's initial interaction with Eden's End. It was less her coming to destroy Eden's End and more her demanding Arkonis Anazi to turn himself over, and her not believing Alex when he told her the man was dead. I should probably update that chapter on here and RR.

I can see your point. Alexander has stated he knows it's a bad decision, but you are also missing a few key points as to why he hasn't considered building his own ships. The first is time. It takes a lot of time and effort to design a ship from scratch. With the pirate ships, he is simply tearing them down to their frame and rebuilding them, but he is laying out most of the systems in the exact same way they were previously, which makes the process much quicker. Alexander's first ship could take over a year to plan, build, and work around unforeseen issues before it might be ready to defend the system. That's all a homebuilt ship would be capable of doing since he doesn't know how to build the FTL systems. He also can't reproduce gravity plating, which isn't necessary, but would make working aboard the ship much more difficult for the human crew. Automated defenses are wonderful, and nothing said he wouldn't build more. But they are only so effective without engines capable of keeping up with other ships. Let's say he skips the smaller drone weapons and builds fully automated weapon platforms, he's going to need a supercomputer for each of them to operate effectively without human input.

TFTC. I enjoy the story overall so please take what I am about to say is aimed at Alex not your story. if that make sense. Honestly I think Alex keeps digging himself deeper into holes. Now he wants to try to make deals with the Char Family to protect him from another pirate but he doesn't want to appear to be working with pirate. He is a fool. Char will want stuff from him and there is no way to keep that relationship secret. And going for five unknown ships is a really dumb risk. A) the time it takes him to go to those three places could be better spent building his own stuff. B) They will probably need to be rebuilt. C) He has huge crew issues and his first thought is get more SHIPS! When it would be way smarter to build more automated defenses. D) He is going to lose people and ships going to attack and take over a Pirate Shipyard. Honestly his plans are just foolish and is going to cost him way more than he will ever get out of it.

Silver Beard

Needs to double down on his engine manufacturing and development. He needs to cut the transit time in half or better. Only place he's going to find more people is in STO that he might be able to eventually trust. If he can acquire, train, and put them to work in the same time an Omni ship takes to make it one way... it'd be the game changer he needs.

Silver Beard

Considering the logistics; he's better off building up his automans and building his own ships vs trying to take over what might well be relics. The ships the cards go to are completely unknown. Could all be miners! It's not a gamble worth pursuing. That said- he could give the 5 cards to the Char as a bargaining chip... they'd have the time, resource, and incentive to acquire them. And if he could get a non-aggression pact from them so much the better.

Thank you for the chapter!
