Depending on how this turns out, this might be the most contrived source of conflict in the whole story. We already have the STO and the Corpo Shadow Council as well as Harlow for conflict in addition to whatever happens when the rest of Eden's End finds out about Alex' intentions in regards to Char. The story doesn't need a conservative party of useless leeches making everything worse on top of that.

Yeah, the train of logic in this plot is kind of ridiculous. Yes, I get the author wants to make the problem of democracy and dissidents an issue for Alex by making the council a source of problems. Although I'm not sure the original council members are that naive to let the dissidents to take over the council with a simple vote to add *4 WHOLE NEW SEATS* when a simple ONE should be enough. And then to let them completely blockade adding new seats from the refugees who are clearly the majority population?! I don't really have a problem with the eventual outcome, but the path to get here should make more sense. The dissidents should be more sneaky and the original council members shouldn't act like they don't care at all. Perhaps they view the council as not really a governing body at all with no responsibilities, so there's no reason not to add more seats. Although that's not quite clear. I think clearest path from here for Alex is to saddle the new council members with lots of responsibilities and making them accountable to the people. That solves the "free-loading" problem both politically and practically.

Alex REALLY needs to get with it. His apathy is ridiculous and will get many people, maybe even Yulia killed. These people are self entitled jerks thinking they deserve the assets that belong to Kane without even working for them. The people on the original council are also horrid. To vote to appoint people who clearly have rebellion on mind is gross negligence and proves them to be ingrates who took Alex's gifts while not doing their jobs in good faith. These people should have been deported, not supported. Now that Alex has formed a sovereign nation he should act like the leader he doesn't and form his own government with people he can trust. Those who don't like it can leave. Maybe, just maybe these people are not plotting rebellion and just want to improve everyone's lives, which I can agree with as Kane kinda only looks for people with a specific set of skills, but the going trends don't offer much hope for that to be the case.

Vaughn Fredericks

I'm not sold on the logic here. Unless they're clueless, the old council would know what the dissidents would do. They could have voted for the refugees to get seats first, then voted for the dissidents.

Yeah, I am kind of hoping that Kane's treatment of the drifters is depicted as a bit more morally grey. Yes, he didn't kick the drifters out, but not once has he really put in the effort to make their lives better in a way that didn't benefit him. And I'm sure there would be many people without the skills or physical ability to do Kane's jobs who still want good healthcare. I hope that in addition to Harper we see some more legitimate candidates bring up grievances and rise to form Eden's End's first government. I think it could also give Kane some character growth by forcing him to confront how much his robot emotions dampener has affected his behaviour.

Random

The best way I can think for Alexander to handle things going forward now he has an independent nation state is to write a constitution probably by outsourcing it to an STO law firm or think tank that gives BSE a bunch of exclusive rights and prerogatives then try to run the civil side of things as at least a limited democracy I don’t really see Alexander setting up a corpo state, ruling like a king and then dealing with the administrivia as really worth his time or something he would volunteer for.

ShadeByTheSea

Like if they're going to add people they need to put actual thought into and not just add someone because they got a mob together and demanded a seat. With the current system they should make another council for civil disputes and have that council vote two members into the main council at the very least.

ShadeByTheSea

Idk I'm hoping Kane vetos their inclusion on the council. But honestly don't care how "realistic" this plot point is. It's kinda just a distraction from the plots that make the story enjoyable. They're drifters they ether comform to the new system or go drift somewhere else. If they let this blatant corruption happen than I doubt this society will last or be any better that sto or the pirates. The MC lived through a time where corruption threatened to destroy democracies he should know the signs.(and no I'm not talking about usa politics)

da Finnci

The old council comes across as really stupid and naive. If you want 8 new seats, you don't vote for 4 and then have the new members decide upon the last 4. I guess this is a setup so Alex can properly remove them? But doesn't he need them for his independent nation loophole?

Aclys

You'd be surprised, this here is a small community growing two or three times its original size, the changes in terms of opportunities for those willing and able to do work will inevitably separate the people into those who benefit and those who dont... and the leeches who where comfortable enough in a rat hole where noone had opportunities... are now trying to slice off their little piece of the pie because that's what they did before... there was just a lot less to go around and less law and order to complain to about it. As for these loudmouths managing to get people behind them? They seem to have had literally nothing else to do while the council people are overburdened with work as it is.. the deadbeats have a point in that more representation could be good... but it obviously should not be them and, as usual, the people least fit for politics are the ones most eager to get into it.

Zachary Patterson

More obstacles yea!

Silver Beard

The downside of becoming an entity- the rise of beaucracy. I think an isolationist dome is sounding better all the time though.

Shmooggie

The moment Alex hears of this he will be attempted to hit the “abort” button.

Athena Alexandria

If this was a month ago I would have said Harper is cartoonishly evil. Now he seems about right.

cm123

I'll suspend my judgment for now but I'm not sure I like the way this is going. Harper is cartoonishly over the top, like an Ayn Rand or a superhero movie villain. For me this lands like a bad moral lesson for kids "see children, whenever someone pushes collective revendications, they must be a self serving hypocrite". I get that this trope is everywhere, so why not here too, but it's a pet peeve of mine, we deserve better villains :)

Overclocked

Wtf? I have a hard time believing these people, most of whom struggle for everything they could get before Kane, are this retarded. I get there are leaches in every society, but seriously, the council members lived a hard life, finally get good things without relying on the STO, and they are worried about the disenfranchised? Let me tell you something, when your poor, going meal to meal or paycheck to paycheck, you don't give a shit about anyone but your immediate family. Murder would not he far from these councilors minds in order to keep Kane happy and keep their new found stability.

Danielle Warvel

Man, Harper is such a scumsucking little toad.
