To my mind, this launching is equivalent to a rail gun launcher, which means the initial configuration would be very much pretty close to launching like a gun and aligns with Alex's function first mindset (get it out quick). The sudden reaction of them after the launch sounds like less than a second. I think it'll likely get slowed down to around your 5s range or maybe could even include a sudden ship acceleration to offset the launcher impact, allowing it to launch the missile faster.

Okay I did some math (No expert here correct me if I'm wrong). Assuming Ship mass = 100 tons (not using us tons btw) Missile mass = 1 ton Firing Velocity = 500 m/s (higher end of handgun velocity) We can then calculate how fast the ship should get moved like this: 1 ton * 500 m/s = 500 ton m/s 500 ton m/s / 100 ton = 5 m/s Now the missing key ingredient is time. Because the missile is accelerated via a rail? there is no "instant" recoil like in a gun but a gradual "recoil". Assuming it takes 1 second to fully launch the missile the ship would be moved back 5 meters. Going from 0 m/s to 5 m/s in 1 second results in an acceleration of 5m/s² or ~0.5 G. I'd say 0.5 G does not throw somebody into their seat belt :P (For reference ~0.5 G is like full stopping in your car at ~3.1 mph with your seat belt on)

It essentially accelerating that mass to near bullet-like speeds.

Yes but not a lot I would imagine unless the ship is truly unexpectedly light? (I personally wouldn't have expected any notable recoil or at least not this strong emphasis on it :))

The missile is being launched using rails, so there is certainly going to be recoil from firing a one-ton projectile.

Des

"Branston grunted as he was thrown forward against his restraints as the missile was launched from the rails. He might need to ask Alex to tone that down if it imparted this much force to such a small ship." This doesn't make much sense unless the missile is a substantial fraction of the ships total weight. I think you said earlier that the missile weighs 1 Ton. I assume even this "small" ship weighs much much more. (For orientation a F-15 Eagle jet weighs ~14 tons and the space shuttle orbiter ~78 tons. I can imagine your ship either even heavier than those examples or maybe about the same weight as the space shuttle?) Firing a 1 Ton missile having a huge impact like that doesn't make sense to me.

It is almost as if computer power is being accorded some limited power, even small current chips can do amazing things.

Glad to see Alex focus on FTL communication, making BSE's own version of Q-comm it's a must.
