Well, this is probably also true, but I also feel it ia a bit of a trust issue on irwins side. Thats what i recall thinking while writing this. He trusts sone people, and thus over ... uses... them. Uses is not the right word, but I thibk you understand what I mean?

Mariusz Klimczak

It's a bit strange to send your first officer to show passengers to their cabin, when there are hordes of other crew members on deck doing make-do work. I imagine it's easier to focus on your named characters in the story and so they are sometimes end up doing things more suited to being delegated to someone else?

Thor Hammer

So we don't get to see Irwin fix the rune guys hands? I was excited for that, having a rune expert join the club

Steven Thompsen

When I Saw this comment it made me think of that little anime cartoon chibi gif of that kid running up to those people and being like yeah and then running off again

Govir Drauka

Just checked on the website via my PC. It looks normal there. Idk what's different, and it's not a big deal. Just wanted to give you a heads up it looked different for some reason.

Govir Drauka

I think it’s happened once before, but awhile ago. Visually the paragraphs here don’t have any extra spacing. Looking at chapter 400, there are clear blank lines between paragraphs, but here there aren’t any. Also, I’m on Patreon app for iOS, if that matters.

Steven Thompsen

True but we also don't know the exact nature of the card slots are they physical are they spiritual are they etc

Tetrasimplex

Yeah eyes might be more complicated to normal humans, but people only have magic cardslots on their hands, presumably making them the hardest part of the body to heal.

Carrarn

Trying to see whats different, but nothing shows on my end. This is the first time this happened?

Steven Thompsen

I gotcha, although I do partially agree with you both I feel like healing isn't as in depth as Nicholas made it seem for instance daub had his eye regenerated/healed by someone else plus daub said they had multiple healers at low level and the eye is infinitely more complex than a hand at least in my opinion. It just seems like healing is more complex and harder than it's been previously led to believe.

Carrarn

Nicholas is mostly correct - healers that can heal missing limbs are rare, and with many warriors having rather strong healing to the point of some being able to regenerate things, they are also less needed. About why I didn't mention it, yet... That's an odd one. I have it in my head how it should be, and I could swear I mentioned it before, but I've been looking through my documents, and you are right. I haven't. I'll be adding this during the rewrite of book 3 (which I'm working on now, so its a great thing you pointed this out now) I'll be explaining on Fiverio and probably Scour that cutting of hands is an ancient punishment for some crimes, and how losing over half of your cardslot on a hand has horrible consequences.

Nicholas Del Rossi

I think it’s coming in as a result of the discussions in the comment section as to what might happen if someone received a hand injury, it may get added earlier on during editing and revisions, could also be that the author just forgot to add it after world building it till this point due to all the other things going on, and the fact that there were no main characters receiving such injuries, or plans to receive such thus requiring the foreshadowing. As for healers, if I’m not misremembering, they are actually rather rare, and this would not just require healing. It would require an ability to move the bones to their proper place, damaging healing, and overall changing the hands into a functioning state, something that doesn’t seem cheap if it’s even available in this area of the portal gallery, someone capable of really growing limbs might be able to simply cut them off and regrow them from scratch, but that is likely even less common, if you think about the general power level of cards and the rarity of Smith is able to push non-healing oriented cards into healing directions, one that level of power would be highly covered and potentially targeted either for recruitment or by less scrupulous individuals, they would need protection either in the form of personal power, which would be very difficult to acquire alongside the healing, or an organization, most of the powerful ones not being out here in force or with any desire to bring a healer here, or at least not one they’d be willing to offer the services of, or protection from individuals and small groups, which also might not be willing to share even the existence of such an individual and almost certainly would not offer their services for cheap, depending on any requirements, such as time between healing abilities being used, and that’s assuming they’re even willing to work for what little amount the duo could pay.

Steven Thompsen

I would assume someone had a healing card or regeneration card The slots will be fine so wouldn't he just need to find a healer I don't see what the big deal would be also I find it odd you're adding this caveat this late in the story.

Govir Drauka

Just an fyi: the formatting of this appears to count it as all one paragraph. My text to speech highlighted the whole thing together with no breaks.

Albert Benny Oliyakkattil

Tftc!

Tetrasimplex

Creating a tier of card above soulcard that lets people travel (especially if you can create multiple) could be a change in the universe on par with the original adoption of cards by the galadins. Definitely excited to see it!

Antony Claughton

as tall as he was ==> as tall as she was reminded him or Greldo ==> reminded him of Greldo

Carrarn

Fixed that 2 :)

Thanks for the chapter! Hopefully Irwin doesn't get into long-term trouble for aiding someone in their commission of debt evasion. I'm sure well-placed bribes or simply making himself untouchable would "solve" the problem, but it's not good on a societal level for the powerful to be able to casually escape consequences by virtue of being rich and powerful. That leads to some troubling places, and I wouldn't be surprised if we see that be abused and see its knock-on effects somewhere else. Irwin is really a bull in a china shop right now, and I can't help think that these very public "wow" moments are also going to inspire doomsday cults (alien squid invaders!), frauds (people pretending to be Irwin's emissaries or part of a fictional charter headed by him), manhunts (might spark Firzin getting rounded up, recall: smith hunts), or perverse experiments (recall: heartcard shattering) by those less upstanding than he is. Speaking of which, it's interesting to see some people, like the random kid, who are able to evade Irwin's perception. It's a skill he and Greldo absolutely need to work on, even if it's not something either needs a card for. The method to get it is probably some sort of boring practice over several months, until Greldo can make his visible shadow tail into just that of some random shadowwalker and his aura into something much more voluntary, and Irwin can get his visible soulforce under control. Maybe he could play some elevator music to still his soulscape's emanations or channel some of Ambraz' barrier to seal it all in, so he just looks like a less-soulcarded individual. Or perhaps there's something in this random kid's cards or personal techniques that would let Irwin suppress his visibility. Maybe the secret is even just in Irwin's own cards - his first card had a hidden higher grade to it, and it's possible he's able to extract that specific soulforce effect and manually (maybe musically) replicate it using his own soulforce control.

Not Me

Another thing - decapitation refers specifically to the head (capit = head). Dismemberment might be a better word.

Carrarn

Fixed, thanks :)

Lenora

“He might day in the process” > “He might die in the process”

Stephen Pearson

Great chapter, thanks! :-)

Carrarn

I took me 5k words to finish this part - next chapter will start with some Rindiri and the kids ;) After that we are going to have some bits and bobs as time flies a bit quicker as we head to another moment that has been in my head for... years.
