Hmmm maybe I was hasty with what I said about terlo but still feel that Irwin needs to be more involved in the cards of his crew.

Håvard

He did not shater Hindis soulcad. Its long enough ago that I can't confirm the details, but no soulcard was shattered.

I wonder what the limits of summon cards are. Does it have to do with size, mass, soulforce, sapience, or what? Like, clearly you can fit a whole man-sized sentient being in there, Coal may not be human-level intelligent but is certainly not a mindless beast. And Derlin cards let you fit a whole sapient creature with special powers into the card, although that may be related to the fact that the card is limited-use and a bit of a hack compared to the rules by which regular cards function. Could a sufficiently powerful, determined, and probably unethical summoner fit a human into a summon card?

Antony Claughton

I do feel there would be a disconnect if we didn't see some of his story. Such as how the Yurindri react to all going with them, how at least some of the cities react to them/him, as well as what state the cities are in. Are they desperate for cards, desperate for smiths (almost certainly), or reasonably sufficent from the world they connect to. Did the Deadpact mercenaries wipe the city from existence? Has the internal world been attacked by Guildar portals/addled? Can they find more of Gloom's species, or remnants? Does Irwin learn what its like when people see him as a power that must be managed and (if possible) benefited from, exploited, or at least avoided. I'd love to be back in Eluathor in a flash, but I think there is a lot to learn that it would be a disservice if at least some of it wasn't shown, rather than in exposition. I could easily see you jumping ahead to them putting into port at a city and Irwin musing on what they'd found at the previous 2-3 cities as a summary. And in the short-term, can they catch that guy following. Maybe what his thoughts are.

Antony Claughton

I think you'd need a world card for that. I don't think an Ammolite card would do.

Nicholas Del Rossi

Maybe he will get a summon focused card, chaos whale, or songbird phoenix, or titan or something else we have not seen yet, could also be no summons, he already has a large group of people and a Ganvil bonded to him who will likely always be by his side.

Antony Claughton

Yep, Irwin’s power level likely protects him. And HE knows he’s keeping the cards to save his people. But from an outsiders view it may appear very different.

Nicholas Del Rossi

So there is the fact that ships just solve to many problems beyond just speed. cargo, passengers, safety as distance from the threats on the ground, consistent travel none reliant on a single individual’s ability, stamina over such long distances, and protections attached to the ship itself, good sight lines that help with navigation. even if there is an ability to travel faster unless it can pair with a ship like Greldo bringing it into the shadow realm, or they are going alone/with other extremely competent carded like Irwin, then they need to fulfill all of the ability’s and advantages of the ship to some extant. Edit also its its own camp to rest at and carry supply’s, its also consistent and reproducible by groups without hunting for specific cards. on worlds they do if I recall often use there own varied types of transport, maybe closer to the center of the branch they us other more specific card required transport but out here that is probably rare due to the lack of soul force from low soulcarded meaning only specialized elites could move as such.

Adunn

He should try to get a chaos whale summon

Albert Benny Oliyakkattil

Tftc!

That would certainly be very ugly, but that's a really good point. Socializing unequal resources can help the community as a whole, and it can be a much-needed windfall in the face of danger, but it absolutely violates whatever property rights they have. I could see why a reasonable person or a community might do so. And I don't think a community in crisis would be as willing to buy any "greater good" arguments or subjective value arguments. Irwin's people certainly matter more to him than this random port city does, but the reverse is true as well; this random port city matters more to itself than Irwin's people do to it. I think a rational calculation would probably be that Irwin can do more damage to their city than forcefully coopting all of Irwin's cards would benefit it, but there's many irrational, emotive, or selfish, locally rational decisions that could tip things away from not hurting Irwin. Things such as crabs-in-a-bucket mentality, or someone who stands to lose much or die anyways if they can't get the cards, disbelief on the nature of whatever problems, or misinformation about Irwin's ability. If such sentiment exists, and the city representatives are smart about things, but unwilling to completely throw in with Irwin, they might angle for higher rates, maybe publicly label it some sort of "punitive tax" to appease the citizenry without incurring any acts of violence against Irwin or against themselves.

Absolutely. But before the storms, you'd imagine that there would be ways for enterprising, powerful, solo travelers to cross long distances, and I'm curious to what they are and why we haven't seen people use them. Shadowwalking seems to lean very heavily into the protection from the elements aspect, which is great in the current circumstances with the storm. But surely there was at least some solo travel before the invasion. It seems almost too convenient for shadowwalking to be the best way to travel. If it were, why would it be so associated with spy guilds and shady folk rather than scouts or the like? Or maybe that's just an emergent property of the current circumstances - perhaps all the capable, mobile explorers have left this branch for other, less-explored ones, or for more protected ones. So there could be other cards and card combinations more useful for travel, except anyone who actually can travel has already done so and left, and thus we've never seen them. Leaving Greldo's buffed shadowwalking as the best method of travel of a lot of lesser options.

Antony Claughton

I wonder if it will occur to Irwin that if he only trades cards then some worlds, especially more desperate ones, may see him in a similar light to the way they saw the card merchants back on Giard. Who they eventually plundered, justifying it as saving the people.

Antony Claughton

The travel issues are caused by the Guildar created storms.

I love the worldbuilding and appreciate the nod to logistics, especially now that the party has grown. It's also nice to see some of the other species get fleshed out. There's a lot of Viridian and Ignitzion representation - we've seen how they act as individuals, as ethnic enclaves outside of their homes, as a culture, and as the reigning power within a given space. But now we get to have a look at Granitians and maybe Onyxians. And thus far, we've only really had a small peek at Onyxian culture, rituals, values, diet, social structure, etc. through the rather limited secondhand lens of whatever Boohm was willing to share. I'm kind of interested to learn a little more what humans and Galadin descendants here do to preserve their legacy. Are they short-lived drifters, just a bit higher than Yuurindi, with a fractured cultural heritage, just filling the gaps in other peoples' social structures? Or do they create their own uniquely complex and powerful organizations? Or something in between, are they rootless but respected, and well-integrated into wherever they make their home? Do they forge powerful kingdoms on other branches, leaning into particular legacies of legendary past humans (or Galadin?)? Do they value industriousness, or ambition, or community? Do they seek to cultivate powerful families the way Ignizians do, or strive for some form of immortality in the way that Viridians have their trees and Gelwin has himself? There's a lot of ground to cover, and I like every peek that we get.

Fun, thanks for the chapter! This long-distance travel issue brings up some questions. Surely there's other, more common and efficient Portal Gallery travel options than shadowwalking, which feels a bit like a short-distance blink conscripted into long-distance jaunts. Wind or storm-based travel seems like the most obvious answer. It seems like it would provide some innate resistance to the harsh conditions as well as a way to keep a consistent and high travel pace without constant energy expenditure, like simple landspeed-based improvements might. Something like some sort of earth or foot-based card that gives increased speed/stamina as long as the user is touching dirt, for instance. Then again, teleportation might not be bad - if a teleporter can go 50 miles in a jaunt, with a 30-minute cooldown, that's the same as a flier or a shadow traveler going 100 miles per hour. It might even be more stable - if they can go 800 miles every 8 hours, they can spend their cooldown time hunkering down, camping, and otherwise relaxing, whereas other travelers are spending their time actually traveling. Which kind of brings up the other half - is Greldo just a beast, endurance-wise, and just constantly powerwalking in silence for most of the day? Or is there some trick to how he gets distance without having to exert quite as much personal effort to move, like traveling along shadow-world jetstreams or something? And how do other long-distance solo travelers do this, particularly ones that aren't shadowwalkers? Flying beasts? Lightweight travel tent-pods? Gliders? Little skiffs?

Antony Claughton

everything something ==> every time something admit reforged soulcards wasn't ==> admit reforging soulcards wasn't What was her name, ==> wouldn’t they also ask the ganvil’s name? theirs a big chance ==> there’s a big chance be a growing exponent ==> be growing exponentially

Stephen Pearson

Thanks for the chapter! Fwiw, I've always enjoyed the pace you tell your story; if they were at this world for a while it would be because there's good story to be had:-)

Antony Claughton

So, are we ever going to find out what the other two cards (one ruby, one diamond) at the event were? Especially as one was odd and he wanted Ambraz to look at it.

Eric M

He does have that diamond fruit bush card, I wonder how much they would part with for that?

Carrarn

Oh, they have plenty of food... Just no more than two types ;)

Eric M

Taking it this is another stop without enough food to go around

Carrarn

For those worried - we won't be staying on this world long, but I wanted to give an idea on how they would be handling the logistics of it. After this, we are going to speed up a bit :)
