Great to see Jason had my same reaction at seeing Ivankov for the first time! It is obviously inspired by Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry) from the Rocky Horror Picture Show and the face make up is like that worn by Gene Simmons of the glam metal band KISS. I think OP was the first anime I ever watched to include crossdressers and queer characters. When I saw Bon-chan for the first time, although he was a foe back then, I knew this show was absolutely my type of thing as I was finally seeing non-binary characters portrayed in a major work of fiction.

I love Impel Down so much especially because of how positively Bon Clay and all his people are used throughout the world and story. Instead of negative preaching or insulting like what often happens today, they are just nice people doing their own thing. And honestly meeting them is a massive blessing. We have gotten so used to Luffy being alone from the Straw Hats, that another faction around him and BC is really nice. Not even talking about the rest of the reunions.

Very based. I never saw him as gay, but easily as a cross dresser or nb. None of them are crazy about it. And it's always used positively instead of preaching or insulting.

This a good time to point out that gender and sexuality aren't the same thing. That being said, I always assumed Bon Clay liked the to have the best of both worlds. His gender isn't limited so I figure he doesn't limit himself to just men or women, but maybe that's just me seeing a bit of myself in him 🤷🏻‍♂️

Tbh on the subject of whether he is gay or not. I don’t care either way lol. The vast majority of Okama are gay/lgbt. But many cross dressers aren’t. I’m gay and not an Okama haha. Whether Bon clay is or is not of the gay persuasion he is a nakama and the goat. All love to my two favs J and H <3

ain't no way.... i forgot that some men like to cross dress... i went to a bar with my brother and saw a beautiful lady and my brother saw me looking her way... he said "bro.. number one, that's a guy...two, he's not gay...and three, his girlfriend is the girl beside him."...we hung out with him all night and he was so cool...it was like hanging out with one of the boys on Halloween. he was not paying for his drinks though because guys who took a liking to him bought his drinks not knowing the truth.... and so i call him Gubet'nu ...which means government in my language..lol.. because he's hiding the truth....LMAO
