Tiger could not overcome his hatred for humans for the trauma he endured but he still had the wisdom to realize that there could be hope for fishmen and humans who haven't experienced that trauma. Easily in my top 3 One piece side characters

You have finally reached my favourite backstory for secondary characters in OP: Koala and Fisher Tiger. I can't tell you how much this story made me cry and still does every time I watch it. It's so deep and full of nuances, so many contrasting emotions. Fisher Tiger suffered too much and he wasn't able to forgive humans for what happened to him, but he realised that Otohime was right and that if his generation could not make a difference, then they should at least not burden the younger generations, the kids, with their same hatred. Koala is that hope, the bridge between fishmen and humans. Even if he is dead now, his legacy lives on. Outstanding character. And we only see him in a handful of episodes. That's Oda for you.

I was very shocked to see how small Otohime was compared to Shirahoshi and I too was curious to know how she gave birth. Then I remembered that fish lay eggs. Also, in the case of seahorses (which remind me of merfolks), the female seahorse transfers her mature eggs into the male's brood pouch to be fertilesed and it's the male that carries the eggs and gives birth to thousands of youngs. So it could be either way.

I would just skip the filler episode this time because its a crossover with another Anime called Toriko you haven't seen.

Even though it's easy to draw parallels between the Queen/Tiger and MLK/Malcom X, what's fascinating to me is the fact that deep down Tiger knew the Queen was right, all humans aren't monsters in fact many of them are good people, but his trauma as a slave took the best of him and that's why he tried during his lifetime to keep his demons buried inside of him. If we think about it he considered himself as a lost cause due to the fact that he will never be able to forgive humans and see them as kind people. But he knew that he had to preserve the future generations(such as Koala, even the youngsters from fishmen district such as Hordy...)from those hatred thoughts, and it is powerful to see that beyond all of his trauma his last resquest to his crew is that no one on the island has to find out about how he died, in order to not become the fuel of a burning hate that will consume the Fishmen specially the young ones. That's also why I think he took Koala under his wing, beyond the fact that he sympathises with her trauma as they shared the same evil experiences as slaves, he really wanted to show her that Fishmen aren't monsters and knowing them will change all of her preconceived thoughts on Fishmen. For me that's where ODA Sensei shines, with messages like "if you take the time to know a person, you won't fear him, and if you don't fear him you won't hate him..." Now we kinda get how Jimbei and Arlong ended up becoming what they are today, as they both a coin side of Tiger's mind, one being the will to not create more chaos between humans and Fishmen + hoping for a future where humans and Fishmen will understand each other, and the other one being the embodiment of the hate and resentment Tiger had towards humans. Sorry once again for the long post, and as always loved your reactions H & J👍.

Koala is the cutest calling him Uncle Tiger. And Tiger is such an amazing character, he is so wise to have such a nuanced stance even having endured so much. He recognises his own prejudice, which is huge considering he has every reason to hate humans. Such internal strength and introspection even in his death bed.
