I am aware he used life energy or at least that's what he claims his intention was but claims after he had more power than he assumed due to retaining it from Yoko but when Yusuke did it he literally needed Kuwabara to save him and give his own energy. Kuwabara's fight was a gag that required no life energy but rather the "power of love" with Yukina being there. It's certainly not super consistent which is fine it's me just nitpicking and not that big a deal.

YES! as victor said. if you pay attention to the show spirit energy and life energy are different. Kurama didnt have enough spirit energy for this rose whip, he used the rest of his life energy to use one of his stronger attacks instead... its not a "rule of cool" its explained right infront of you.

He used his life energy to do it. It's been a thing since like episode 21. He didn't have the spirit energy to summon the rose whip but used his life energy for the final attack, like Yusuke and Kuwabara in previous fights

lol paused right as there was a tiny hint to what's going to happen next episode but it's all good. I do think the idea he couldn't even summon his rose whip but suddenly had enough energy to summon the death plant and survive is a little hard to believe but it's a shonen and rule of cool really applies hard in this case that can forgive it just because how awesome the rest of the fight is and the dialogue from Karasu and how twisted he really was.

Fun fact. The beginning of these final fights is the reason Toonami could no longer host the series. It’s why they started showing it on Adult Swim. It became too gratuitous.
