Goku was flying in episode 3 when he was checking to see where Gohan was in Radiz ship before the fight started. Then he was flying during the Kamehameha before Radiz blew him out the sky

That is correct. He learned to fly while training with Kami in DB before Piccolo Jr fight. Its ki intensive so he uses nimbus to conserve energy, and at this point in the series Nimbus is still faster than he could fly. After training with King Kai he's faster but still tries to conserve energy by using it. He doesnt stop using it til after Vegeta.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. But I believe Goku learns how to fly sometime around the last World Martial Tournament where he fought Piccolo. But at this point in DBZ, flying expends too much energy and stamina. Given that he had to fight someone way stronger than him (Raditz), he needed every bit of energy he could muster. That's why he still uses the Nimbus.
