I don't think they made them look weak. Everyone just expected that just because they are so powerful to run through everyone like it's nothing, but they always look for the more peaceful route, and that's what makes the missions seem longer. Because end of the day this is Goku, and if he wanted can crush anybody. But he rather leave things better than he found them than worst

Yeah they made all the characters look weak here, but I promise after episode 18 or something the show goes back to normal and you get those dbz vibes again.
