most of of the time I go full color on diffuse channel and 100% self-illumination. no lights no shadows. or I use my color gadient Ramps also self illuminating material. it is rendering super quick. in max you can use scanline render for this.

I've always been curious about how you work in 3D, this is the kind of quality peek-behind-the-curtain content I've been waiting for! I'd love to see more about how you set your 3D scenes up- a bit more of a breakdown for some of the particular effects (little wormies, how you set up your sine driven folding plants), would be very welcome.
