“Don’t play coy with me! This is the whole reason you wanted us to settle down somewhere, off the radar, just so you could find a new host for your fuckin’ spawn!”
I had been shouting, at the top of my voice, and hadn’t heard the bedroom door open. I spun around as the symbiote washed over me, seeking to camouflage itself over my body as somethin’ innocuous again. Ryan stood in the doorway, his eyes wide and his mouth slightly open. Guess he got off work early.
“E-Eddie?” He said in a small voice.
“Don’t be scared, Ryan.” I said, puttin’ my hands up. “It’s okay, look I’m fine.”
“What was that? It, it’s still on you? What the hell is that?”
He backed out of the room, and I knew he was gonna make a run for it. As Venom, we quickly overtook him before he reached the front door and barred his escape.
“Please let me go!” He said anxiously.
“Ryan, babe, I can’t, we need to talk.” I said, tryin’ to sound reassuring.
“There’s something alive on you.” He said, watching it slide over my skin. Apparently the symbiote was too stressed-out by the situation, my extreme mood changes, to settle on a form properly.
“You’re right, this is, a ‘friend’ of mine. His name is Venom.”
“But what the fuck is it, Eddie?”
“It’s an alien symbiote, and, we’ve been together for a long, long time. I promise it means you no harm, or me for that matter.”
Ryan seemed to calm slightly when Venom stopped movin’ and settled itself into a tee shirt and jeans.
“Is it, always on you?”
“Yeah.”
“And I just never knew because it makes itself look like clothes and stuff?”
“Well, yeah.”
“So it’s still part of you when we’re…” He shuddered.
“Yes, but it, I dunno, it doesn’t view human sex the same way as us. It sort of removes itself from our experience.”
“That is, the strangest thing anyone has ever said.”
“Yeah, maybe so.” I said in agreement.
“This is the reason you left New York I take it?”
“Yeah.”
He was silent for a time, looking at me, narrowing his eyes, mulling things over.
“Fuck, fine, you know what, I’m going to make some coffee and we’re going to talk this all out.” He announced and headed towards the kitchen.
“Thank you for this, y’know--.”
He put his hand up to quiet me. “It figures, honestly. I score the perfect boyfriend. Big, blond, bearded muscle daddy, so it only makes sense that he literally has a fucking alien living in him.” He said, shaking his head.
“So, you’re sayin’ I’m your boyfriend now?” I asked and dared to flash a smile.

And so we had it out. I told him everything, or at least, everything that seemed pertinent to our situation. I told him about my old job as a photographer at the Daily Bugle, my hatred all the way to eventual tolerance of Spider-Man. I skimmed over details where Venom hurt or killed people. If pressed, I’d own up to it, but for now I just desperately wanted him to see me as a man, and not the monster I used to be. He listened intently to every word.
“So you climb walls, shoot webs, are super strong and your, um, suit does all this for you?”
“Yeah, basically.”
“Wow, people would kill for that kind of power.”
“They do, that’s why I’m across the country and keepin’ a low profile.”
“I understand now.”
“I’m real glad you were willin’ to listen to me.”
“One more thing.”
“Shoot.”
“What was the conversation you and Venom were having when I came into your room earlier?”
“Um, how much did you hear?” I asked, stalling.
“Just tell me.”
“The symbiote wants to reproduce, spawn. It, uh, wants you to be the host for it.”
“Holy shit.”
“I said no way! I said there’s no way in hell that I’d ever let--”
“Let me think about it.” Ryan said.
I was surprised to say the least.
“Think about, what exactly? The nightmare of having this alien presence in your head at all times? Or about bein’ hunted by super-powered soldiers who have determined you’re a threat to be exterminated?!”
“Hey, don’t yell at me!”
“Sorry, I just, you don’t know what it means. You think you do, but.”
“Then tell me, show me. Help me understand. Let me make my own decision.”
So that’s what I did, that’s what we did. Over the next week or so, I took him out into the city and really showed him what Venom could do. I expressed to him the depths of the creature’s appetite, its subversive nature, but also the strengths, the sheer power and adaptability. I really tried to be honest but also play up the reasons he shouldn’t want a symbiote of his own.
We were returnin’ to our apartment after an evening of web-slingin’ around quiet parts of the city, Ryan held tightly under one arm against my side. The way he had his arms around me, held Venom, it was evident that his unease and fear were long gone. We descended down the brick wall between some old tenement buildings where the symbiote changed itself into street clothes. We were only a few blocks from home when Ryan said the words I had been worryin’ about.
“I, want to be the host Eddie.”
I looked up at the night sky, hidden mostly by fog as it always seemed to be.
“It’s not glamorous. It’s a pain, y’know? Feedin’ the thing, never bein’ alone with your thoughts, it’s a hassle at the best of times.” I said.
“Yes, I know, you’ve told me, many times now. I’m not going to change my mind.” The kid said.
“He wants to be the host for our spawn, Eddie. Now stop speaking ill of us!” The symbiote hissed.
“Well, what happens now?” Ryan asked.
“Venom tells me he’s ready to uh, reproduce, so I guess we just decide when.” I told him.
“How about in three days?”
“What’s in three days?”
“Well, it’s my birthday actually.”
I stopped to look at him. “No foolin’? And this is what you want? Some alien suit goop using you as its forever home?”
“When you put it that way, how can I say anything but an enthusiastic ‘yes!’”

So the day came. We went out to dinner, nothin’ fancy, but a pretty nice place we both like and I paid for him. Yep, a real date and all that. Perfect boyfriend remember? Askin’ questions about what it would feel like, if their personalities were gonna mesh well, honestly stuff I didn’t know how to answer as it differed for every host. Perhaps Venom had been right all along. For now I didn’t want to think about my alien puppeteer, usin’ me and those closest to me to achieve its own ends. Instead, I thought about helping Ryan learn how to live with his symbiote, how to harness its power and impulses. I could actually teach him a lot about it as no one was more suited to the task than me. For the first time in longer than I could remember, I thought about my future with someone.
