It was a running joke during the Gamestop stock drama on reddit that Spice and Wolf had already taught the internet what short selling stocks meant. The whole town is trading a limited amount of Pyrite and no one wants to miss out on it "going to the moon" lol. So everyone is trying to buy and hold while the price goes up. At the same time it also means no one want be left holding the bag. So glad you are enjoying this show! Thanks for watching!

What Lawrence was doing is offering a future to his rival. When it comes to economic a future is when you buy something for an agreed upon price instead of the current market value. Also Lawrence is trying shorting the market here. Which is when you sell something and hoping that what you sell will go down in price. It’s very risky as you could lose much more money than usual doing this if you are unlucky. But yeah Lawrence plan is by spreading that rumor that many merchants will sell their stones. Which would increase the supply which in turn would meet the demand and hopefully lower the price in turn
