To add on with more unconfirmed implied lore, I think that part of Sparky Sparky Boom Man’s design also hints at him blowing himself up. I think his metal limbs are a result of failed combustion bending attempts maybe while training or while fighting one of his assassination targets in the past. Combustion bending is honestly like the fire bending equivalent of a David and Goliath situation. There are very very few benders or even people who can combat a combustion bender without just getting exploded but if you can smack that third eye then the giant crumbles.

Combustion man blew himself up not zuko. Bethany was actually correct. If his vision is obstructed, then it backfires, just like those old cartoon she referenced. It looks like he’s just shooting randomly but when he shoots a beam, he knows how far he’s sending it and knows when to detonate it. You only realize it the time he first attacked them

Bethany is spot on with how combustion man was killed. If you go back to watch the episode “The Runaway”, you can see the same thing happening there. If a combustion bender is struck in the center of the eye on their forehead, it stuns their bending ability and results in explosions that backfire on the bender
