I also think that it is genuinely a more literary term that has been eclipsed by the words "slander" and "libel" in contemporary legal contexts. The word besmirched has a more moral or ethical context (like referring to polite society and the ruining of a person's ethical reputation) which we might see get revived for historical fictional movies. You almost have to use it partially ironically in everyday conversation today, or else it can sound weirdly out of place.

The Justin Baldoni vs Blake Lively case is really messy because both sides are really trying to have the case settled by public opinion before it reaches the court room. I think to a degree that both sides are telling the truth, Baldoni is essentially saying he was kicked out of his film and lost all creative control to her, and Lively is saying that she was in an unsafe work environment and after calling him and his team out on it he retaliated by orchestrating a smear campaign. There's a bunch of other things like the Taylor Swift and other celebrities being her dragons or people just didn't like her already, that are being pushed out there to make the case more complicated. I don't think we will ever truly have an accurate understanding of what happened.
