My neighbor across the street has the same story as Allen (ironically with a little more actual crime and no prison time). We were able to buy our house cheap AF because no one would buy it and it had been on the market for months and months. We didn't care that much what the neighbors property looked like, and we knew from community members that he was mostly harmless. While it can border on a hazard at times (junk, pests, and road hazard - as people frequently drive down the road to stare at the house and take their eyes off the road), it's mostly just an eyesore that we've learned to ignore. While I mostly agreed with Hasan that people should be able to do whatever they want with their property, I disagree that it has no consequences on neighbors. While it worked in our favor that we got the house for a steal, the sellers were not so lucky and we understand that it will be difficult for us to sell our house while he is still across the street.

Maybe I'm too woke here, but I don't understand why anyone cares what other people do with their yards. I grew up with my neighbour's property having stuff everywhere; cars, bikes, rocks, wood, etc, etc. Maybe it was because I was best friends with their daughter, but I never cared what it looked like. And my family never commented on it either, so hearing that people care if their neighbour's lawn or house is messy. It's pretty shocking. I think if it's that much of an eyesore, maybe don't look at it? I always keep my spaces clean, organised and uncluttered- but what other people do with their things is their free will.

I think many are missing the point with Alan Davis' overarching story. Yes, he spent YEARS away from his family in order to fight for what he thought was right, but I doubt he wanted to spend even a second away from them. If I was Davis' son, what I would've taken away from this is that some things (like someone's freedom to live however they please) are worth fighting for and the sacrifice will eventually pay off if you're in the right side of history. Was this a petty fight overall? I'd say it was, but it's only a microcosm of what could be if, for example, A NATION stood up for what was right and stopped shoving their heads in the sand and pretend there's no injustice taking place, and that it's funded with your own money. Allan Davis' story here goes to show that if you fight for what is right, in spite of being threatened with no longer seeing your loved ones or even the outside world, eventually others will see and/or hear about your story and use that as motivation for their own fight against oppression, discrimination, and the inaction of others who would stay silent and watch injustice take place, rather than do something and risk their own comfort and wellbeing for the right cause.

I guess the whole thing just highlights the systemic problem of individual "freedom" and "private" property being a problem only when it affects accruing capital. The county didn't enforce the law out of concern of the community or improve living conditions but just about property values. He lives in a place that allows him to do that within his own property, comparing other places/countries that have measures for compliance that benefits the community/collective as a whole doesn't make sense given he lives in Florida, USA. In which he is in full rights to do whatever with his property, and that is the place/system he lives in. Whether it's right or wrong in the eyes of his neighbors, which the county also failed to satisfy. If the county really cares then they can have documentations on how his management of his property creates actual hazards for the people living around him, in which they might actually have to improve a lot of things in the community other than just his notorious home.

Saying this because there’s this woman software engineer on TikTok who for a very long time had the incredibly fucking stupid idea to dig a tunnel underneath her house. Like literally building a mine. She has no engineering experience, she knows nothing about mines, and she didn’t get ANY of this approved by the municipality she lives in. Well it turns out building a tunnel underneath your house doesn’t just affect your house because it has the potential to create a fucking sinkhole that affects your neighbors. This isn’t about ‘property value’, it’s one day you wake up and your house is caved in, or maybe you don’t wake up at all. And this woman had the fucking audacity when people told her “hey, you need to get this shit approved by an engineer, you’re not an engineer” to shut people down and ignore them. Well eventually some journalist does some digging and finds out part of the reason why she’s been able to build this tunnel for so long without anyone ratting her out to the government is because her neighbors are undocumented immigrants and don’t want any increased scrutiny on them. Eventually TikTok made this go viral, the city found out, and they put a stop to it. Generally I think building codes exist for a reason and they need to be followed. Engineering rules are written in blood. But there’s also things in them like proper pest control, preventing fire hazards, handling floods and hurricanes properly, etc. I have absolutely zero context on Florida’s building code for this municipality but yeah I think so long as what’s his face is staying inside of that in a way where it’s not going to create a hazard for other people, he’s fine to do whatever he wants and his neighbors should be able to do fuck all about it. Also hate HOAs they can get fucked.

There’s no doubt by that measure that Allen Davis is pretty selfish dude. But even being kind of a selfish asshole and a bad neighbor, he was absolutely done dirty here. It’s insane that the government threw his ass in prison on a petty technicality essentially to protect the investment income of private citizens from being somewhat impaired. My father was a hoarder. Weeds grew out of control. Rats (and the snakes the rats attracted) loved the property. My dad (who was already very ill at the time) actually died in part from an infection from a rat bite, leading to sepsis. House is probably also a fire hazard. I wouldn’t want to live near somewhere like that. It becomes a safety hazard for more than just the property owner. It’s not just an eyesore. If he had a bunch of eyesores (like that sculpture) in his yard but kept the yard otherwise managed, weeded, and clean then maybe I’d support it. Like, I respect the persistent obnoxious rebellious attitude, but cut back the weeds, keep it clean, take measures to prevent vermin. Especially if you’re having children around. It reminds me so much of my father’s property so hearing their complaints of smell, I feel I know the stench they’re referring to. His loved ones shouldn’t be enabling this lifestyle. I don’t think the solution here is just continuously imprisoning this man, obviously, but this is a sad way to live and I don’t think it’s healthy for him or those around him
