On the topic of DIY religions. In Parable of the Sower (1993), the MC proposes a religion called "Earthseed" that she recruits ppl for throughout the book. Her premise is that "We do not worship God... we shape God... as God is change (Earthseed IV), essentially that 'God' is a stand in is how you choose to enguage with the world around you. Somewhat similar to Will's proposed thought of engauging with religious as an individual extention vs a group. Its an incredibly insteresting book that explores how institutions engauge with societies. And the author makes schockingly accurate predictions about the current 2024 workings of the world all the ways back in the 90s.
