I also think many foreigners think Japan is safer than it actually is, but that said, every country has serial killers and they are basically by definition outliers in terms of the kinds of crime that normally occur. Even so, one of the most violent crimes I saw was in Japan (besides seeing 3 people shot dead a few weeks earlier in the US.. that was a wild year for me), when a yakuza forced me to watch him beat up a guy to bloody pulp right in front of my face, and he also threatened me based on my gender and nationality, and this was on a busy street in broad daylight, and eventually the police saw and just told him to take it to a back alley.. so I do wince when foreigners go on about how they don't have to worry about crime in Japan. I think it's good to be wise and keep your guard up in Japan as you would anywhere... and stay out of certain neighborhoods in Osaka, as I learned the hard way, haha. I still like going to Japan, though

My favorite semi-abandoned town (though it's trying to revitalize, which is great ofc!) is Kiyosato, Hokuto. It looks like a theme park, but since it's technically a regular town, you can walk through it and see a lot of cool stuff without trespassing like real abandoned theme park urbex. It would also be cool if hasan visited the leftist dorms at kyoto U, especially Kumano, and other leftist cafes and bars in Kyoto in the future
