I wonder if 'Christmas Wrapping' by The Waitresses playing in the background in the nightclub scene would have been added in afterwards in later years? Cause when this episode first aired just after Christmas 1981, that was still a very very new song that hadn't really got out of the underground yet, it wouldn't chart in the UK till the next Christmas in 1982. That's the kind of stuff my pop music nerd mind goes to!

The first series was just a taster. It just gets better and better. There are some truly cracking episodes in Series 2 and then more fireworks in 3. By the end of 3, I think the depth of the characters was formed. Can't wait to see your reactions.

I think Jess did a fantastic job of the Christmas Cracker crowns. I rate Jess's work a 10/10, which is also my rating of how daft Mike looks wearing it. But we Brits do it every year and feel equally daft! I understand why you don't have crackers in the US, I should imagine every time someone pulled a cracker in a bar or restaurant everyone would duck under the tables in self defense mode. It's the most heartwarming show because as each series progresses it gets funnier, the characters and their close friends Trigger Boycies relationships with the 3 are developed and become part of the main show and even bigger family , there's break ups, family ups and downs growing older, moving out, moving back in, schemes relationships sad times happy times and massive issues tackled that make you cry and then laugh in the same moment. Genius show. Series 1-3 though are just standalone episodes. Series 4 and 5 6 7 and the Christmas Special is where it becomes the number 1 show ever. Love watching yous reacting to it. Wholesome family comedy institution!

The enemy is a slightly derogatory but humorous way of describing your wife. Here in the UK we use a lot of self-deprecating humour and like to “take the piss”. There’s a lot of that type of banter in Only fools. I know you’ll get to learn the humour and appreciate it the more you see and hear it.

I always felt like this episode was a bit of a turning point with Del’s character where we saw his softer side. Up until this episode he’s quite brash and harsh and whilst he can still have those traits later on, he is a genuinely caring, family man. And I love how we see that here ❤️

So glad you enjoyed the first season of “Only Fools and Horses,” as it only gets better and more funnier from season 2 onwards, with new characters being introduced (slowly at first) who would go on to be fan favourites. This helped the writer, John Sullivan, broaden his scope for stories that didn’t just centre around the three leads, making the show a more ensemble piece of comedy TV. Hard to believe how this show, by the time it was near the end of its run, had already become so loved by almost everyone in the UK. But it didn’t start out that way. The viewing figures for the whole first series, averaged around 7 million (which were considered mediocre by BBC comedy standards) and it generally received a lukewarm response from TV critics. However, the BBC gave it another chance and commissioned a second series from John Sullivan for 1982. The second series fared little better and the show was close to being cancelled altogether. What saved it was repeating both the first and second series in a more low-key time slot, which attracted better, more respectable viewing figures in June 1983, that convinced the BBC to commission a third series. From there, the show started to gradually built up a cult following, and started to top the television ratings. Series four followed and that saw viewing figures double those of Series 1. After that, the show was off and running and never looked back!

I think from Series 2 onwards the new theme tune kicks in featuring Rodney, (Nicholas Lyndhurst), singing ! Also, new characters feature and the return of Trigger etc, and also more scenes in the pub, (The Nags Head), as well as scenes shot out on location. Think of England originated with Queen Victoria, when she encouraged the womenfolk to welcome back their men from war. The men would obviously want to have sex with their wives whom they had not seen for some time, so Queen Victoria asked the women to "lie back and think of England" as a service to the men protecting their country. Completely agree. Especially given there is a marked improvement in the quality of OFAH from series 2 onwards. Generally what Mike and Jess do is complete a season of a show then rotate to another show for a season of that then swap back so hopefully that's what they're doing with OFAH as they do with Still Game. Agree that it'd be preferable to rotate it with something better than IT Crowd if that is what they're swapping to, I had thought it was going to be Extras they did in between as that's what was uploaded yesterday in place of the usual OFAH slot.

Couple of points. "Have a butchers out there" means "have a look out there". It's Cockney rhyming slang - butcher's hook = look. Think of England - yes, this comes from the WW2. It is used nowadays as a lighthearted saying when you have to do something you don't really want to do. It probably was literal during the war, but not now. It is often associated with sex (female). Woman says to friend "I'm really not attracted to paul, but he does have a Mercedes and he's promised to take me to his villa in the south of France". Friend replies, "Well, if you want the money, holidays and prestige, you'll have to sleep with him. Just lay back and think of England".

The Production Manager, Jo Austin, was so unfamiliar with Cockney rhyming slang that she thought the actors were misreading the script in rehearsals. Del gets a French saying correct.
