In that case, you could skip the brainwashing and just puppet them directly - having them float ominously after intruders surrounded by spectral hands while wiggling ineffectively in their bonds and struggling to call out muffled warnings past the gags gives a different flavour of terror for everyone involved.

It would be fun if he was left wrapped up like that while serving his new master - granted he wouldn't be a very effective servant with his legs strapped together and his arms immobilised, but watching him hopping about doing his best anyway would be very entertaining...
