Hump’s soul held, but the flood of essence did not stop. It poured into him, rising in relentless waves. The walls of his soul strained from the constant bombardment, swelling beyond what he thought possible, stretching, bloated like an overfilled stomach on the verge of rupte. Agony seared in his chest. Ice lanced through his veils, sharp and cold, while heat churned at his centre. Thought evaporated. All sense of anything else faded. The world shrank to one thing—endurance.
Hold.
The walls stretched further. His mind throbbed with strain. Every part of him begged to give in, to scream, to release it all in a detonation of power and pain. But he knew what would happen if he did. There was no coming back from that. And there was no turning from this path. It was endure or die.
He clenched his jaw so tightly it ached. He dragged every fragment of his will into a single point of focus, threading it into the bulging walls of his soul. His strength didn’t matter. Nothing mattered, as long as he didn’t give in to the pain. As long as he didn’t give in to his own weakness.
Hold.
As the pressure reached his limits, he finally sensed the end of the reserve in his Spirit Well as the stream of power tapered into stillness. For a time, all he could do was keep the walls of his soul stable. The pain was still there, but it was steady—unchanging. Something he could become accustomed to, at least a little.
And then, finally, a break. Some semblance of control returned to him, and with that, he could begin to shape it.
He pulled the walls inward, compress the mass of gathered essence. It resisted him—wild, volatile, desperate for escape like a trapped beast—but he kept going. He compressed it tighter, willing the walls of his soul back into place, sculpting them with his will. As he did, the power became more explosive, but Hump felt himself able to better control it than before. His mind and will were braced. The chaos quietened. The pressure reshaped itself. The pain dulled.
And he felt a change.
The sensation was profound. It spread through his entire body in a surge of warmth, and with it came a sense of weight—solidity. His soul had lost its wavey exterior, compacting on itself, forming a dense core, a tidal sphere of energy. It ebbed and flowed within him in a perpetual motion, waves washing across his soul and out into his channels. Each ripple through him left him a little stronger.
As he came to his senses, he glimpsed another alight connected to him. His bond with Nisha glowed with golden fire. It was bright in his mind’s eye, its radiance resonating with his own channels, as if some deep part of her had recognised his change and risen meet it. Or perhaps this was just the catalyst for her own transformation.
It was a power Hump recognised. One he had only sensed from her twice before, when she had turned golden. When the phoenix essence that had touched her essence first showed its presence in her.
Hump opened his eyes and turned to her.
Nisha sat curled against his side in a quiet coil. Her scales were still black, tipped with golden, but that gold seemed to shine with an inner light now, like sunlight trapped within obsidian. She lifted her head, her eyes meeting his. They were still purple, but golden flakes swam in them now. They were beautiful, reminding him of his Ring of Osidium or perhaps Celaine’s eyes.
A low rumble passed through the room—not sound, but something deeper. A ripple. A tremor. The air warmed and her scales shone brighter, the gold slowly overtaking the black in a slow, seamless wave, flowing over her body like the sun rising.
She purred, half rolling over, leaning into Hump with far more weight than she had previously possessed. He chuckled, his hand going to her belly to pet her. The purr deepened, and from her snout, a thin breath escaped, lighting up the air in a golden mist. It drifted up, dancing in the air like floating embers, before fading into nothing.
In that moment, Hump sensed a warmth in that essence. Not like fire… no, this warmth reminded him most of Dylan’s power. Nurturing, comforting.
“Before you ask,” Celaine said, blinking at the display, “I have no idea.”
It was only then that Hump looked up and was taken aback at what he saw.
The room was a wreck. Faint trails of essence still clung to the air, making the space shimmer. Furniture lay strewn across the floor. Chairs overturned. Paintings hung crooked or lay shattered on the floor. Elixirs had spilled and pooled on the floor like ink. The scent of burning lingered. There were burn marks on the walls, covered in patches of ice where Bud must have put them out.
Around him, his friends stood in a stunned semicircle. Worried. Awestruck. Waiting.
“Well?” Celaine snapped, voice just a little too sharp. “Did you do it? Say something, Hump! We were so worried about you.”
“Are you alright?” Bud asked.
“He doesn’t look completely with it,” Emilia murmured, arms crossed.
Dylan shook his head. “That’s just Hump’s face. I think he’s awake.”
Hump blinked blearily, then gave a lopsided grin. “Oh, I’m awake.” He exhaled, his body still feeling cold, but… strong. His essence surged through his channels in a steady rhythm, and there was more of it than ever. “I did it.”
Then he frowned. “What do you mean that’s just my face?”
Dylan laughed, but it was Bud who spoke next.
“Are you sure you’re okay? You’ve been out of it for hours.”
“Hours?” Hump gave a bewildered shake of his head. “It didn’t feel like hours. Minutes if anything.” He gazed over the destruction in the room. “What happened here? It’s like there was an earthquake.”
“I was hoping you would tell us,” Dylan said. “Never in my life have I heard about anyone’s advancement in wizardry resulting in such a thing. Even for Chosen, that was extravagant.”
“I did this?”
“Oh yeah.” Emilia gave an overexaggerated nod. “Fire was popping up around you. You had grass growing from the tiles at one point, but it quickly got covered in dirt and rock.”
“You looked like you were trying to turn yourself into a flowerpot for a while,” Bud said. “Did you have any idea?”
Hump shook his head, truly stunned. “As far as I could tell I was holding all of my essence inside me. I have no idea how it’s possible.”
“Your soul manifested,” Celaine said. “I’m sure of it—the fire, earth, and grass were all due to your strongest affinities. And the pressure in the room was the same too.”
“Not the same,” Dylan said. “It was significantly stronger than anything I’ve seen you put out before. But Celaine has a point. Your affinities explain the physical manifestations, and if your soul had manifested, you could have perceived your essence in your soul while in fact your soul had expanded beyond your body.”
“It packed quite the punch,” Emilia said. “I’ve been in fights where I left less exhausted. We had to take it in turns leaving the room you were putting out so much pressure.”
“Sorry about that,” Hump said. “Good thing I did this in the safehouse, huh?” He frowned. “You don’t think the neighbours felt it, do you?”
“Wouldn’t surprise me,” Bud said.
Hump let out a sigh and looked at Celaine. “Seems we might be moving.”
He leaned on Nisha, pushing himself to his feet and stretching out his body. Everything felt stiff, though that was hardly surprising if he’d been sat cross-legged on the floor for hours. As Nisha stood beside him, Hump froze in place, glancing at her. All of them stopped and stared at the little dragon. Or, well… not so little.
“It’s not just me, is it?” Bud asked. “Nisha’s about a foot taller than before.”
“Nope,” Celaine said. “We’re all seeing it. But… how is this possible?”
Nisha tilted her head at Celaine, suddenly looking nervous. Her tail dropped to the floor, and she let out a quiet whine.
“Oh, nothing’s wrong,” Celaine said, rushing forward and taking her head in her hands. “You’re just bigger! Look at you! You’re shining too. Such a pretty girl.”
Hump smiled as Nisha’s tail started to whip back and forth, only for it to catch a wooden storage cabinet sending it crashing across the room.
Hump twisted to get a look at Nisha’s tail, significantly longer than before. “That’s going to take her some time to get used to.” He ran a hand over the top of Nisha’s head. “But we’ll get used to it. Look at you! You’re bigger than I am!”
“Her growth is stunning,” Celaine said. “She looks like she’s two years old already. At this rate, another year and she may be rideable. Considering her growth so far, maybe sooner.”
“Then I’ll be a real dragon keeper,” Hump said, smiling.
“I think you’re both forgetting something,” Dylan said. “If she’s growing so much more quickly than an ordinary wolf dragon, just how large will she become?”
Hump and Celaine shared a look. It was clear that the phoenix essence or something else had changed her, but what had it changed her into? Wolf dragons were mighty beasts. If Nisha surpassed them, how far could she go? He turned to her, and she tilted her head curiously. It was hard to imagine her as a giant, house-sized creature… but maybe.
“How about you?” Celaine asked. “How do you feel?”
Hump’s expression changed to one of contemplation. He held up a hand, drawing upon his essence to form a ball of pure power in the palm of his hand. It flowed easily, yet it felt… dense. As if every part of him contained more than before. “Strong.”
His spellbook shook on his hip—a feeling that usually meant something good had happened. Hump took it out and opened it, watching as lines of blue essence scribed across the pages, filling it with a spell formation and descriptions.

He truly had done it. the power still hummed beneath Hump’s skin. His soul had changed, and he could feel it in every breath he took, in the way essence moved around him. It was real. He had advanced.
And with it, the other functions of his spellbook had advanced too.

Description
The Book of Infinite Pages can be used as a focus to wield spell formations up to Tier 7 directly from the spellbook.
Tier 7 spells. Hump would finally be able to use the book to help with Rivers of Lava, which would be a big help. Perhaps more importantly, Spell Storage would allow him to prepare a Tier 7 spell in advance.

Description
Prepare a spell in advance of its use by storing essence within the spell formation. This can be used for spells up to Tier 7. Two spells of different tiers can be stored.

y.254 – Nithrand – I always remember the day my master raised his hand to the sky and manifested a flaming stone the size of a city in moments.
The pinnacle of Alveronian magic sealed within these pages, read for use the moment he needed it. If he found the right spell, he could bring about such sudden destruction that wizards of his own rank would stand little chance. If Rank 6 wizards were all Hump had to contend with, that would be okay. Unfortunately, his enemies had surpassed the impossible threshold. A threshold that Hump was very quickly closing in on.
He flicked through the book, searching for Tier 7 spells that might have revealed themselves. As if hearing his thoughts, a catalogue of new spells was presented to him.
Yet his time to search did not last.
A sharp knock echoed through the safehouse, sudden and firm. Everyone tensed.
Emilia’s eyes snapped to the door. “Who knows we’re here?”
Hump frowned. “Only the Three Eyes… and they’ve never come to visit before.”
“Then we’re cautious,” Emilia said. “We answer it together. Celaine, Dylan—back into the corners. Bud, close but out of direct line. Just in case.”
“I should get the door,” Bud offered, already moving.
He crossed the room quietly, casting a quick glance through the peephole.
Outside, standing tall and stern in his dark coat, was Wizard Aldric, flanked by several strangers, each in similar attire.
Hump exhaled. “Aldric, and he’s brought guests. Seems we may finally get some of our questions answered.”

I wonder if the book has a "how to shrink your dragon" spell, or perhaps the phylactery might. Something that would let Nisha shrink/return as she sees fit would be useful. A fairie dragon on the shoulder fits into a lot more buildings (and underground areas!) than a full sized dragon. Seeing the results for Nisha was interesting. I wonder how much stronger she is now, especially when compared to other dragons of similar size/age. Dylan is a funny guy. Guests right after Hump has come to his sense. No rest for you! Thanks for the chapter.

You know this is one of the first almost physical changes hump has made to his soul, the spirit well could be disguised as just a dense knot of essence but this soul forge hump might need to be careful he is more visibly diverting from the path of a regular wizard, could a high ranked chosen or god actually see the changes Hump has made to his soul like if he managed to conceal the book perfectly he could still be discovered that way
