Maybe the rocks and the debris on the ground were too sharp to safely move like that? Or maybe Gravity doesn't just increase gravity, but also mass, making it harder to crawl than to walk, since walking is just continuously falling, and we know Pokémon can defy conservation of mass anyway, not to mention being able to locally alter gravity like that makes little sense as it should also allow for an incredible propulsion mechanism.

In the heat of the moment, the logical solutions may not present themselves. Brendan in his panicked state would've thought "I need to be quick, I must get up and help her!", therefore he would've tried to stand up and run if possible to rescue her. Also, Adrenaline is one hell of a drug.

Interesting decision at the end there. Looks like someone is going to have a chonky team. I can already see snarky trainers asking if it’s to compensate for something. For Brendan’s feat, I wonder why he decided to stand instead of crawling on hands and knees. More stable, better weight distribution, and better traction for pulling. I might need to go back and see if he was needing to lift up in addition to pulling laterally, as that’d explain his stance
