Practice - three different method

The top image is preview version; you can download the bigger image from the attachment of this post.Whenever I'm coming up with some ideas of painting method I just trying without hesitation. (And failed as expected ;_;) I never had this much drive before I start my Patreon. So I'm glad to have some place which helps me to test new ideas. :D
Practice A: Using default round brush (slightly squeezed to a flat shape) and smudge tool to do a simple shading. Failed because I don't know how to apply color on it.
Practice B: Painting with two base colors (dark grey and white/light orange). Using textured flat brushes and smudge tool. Very easy for sorting out small edges which follow the right forms, but not good for building color and value.
Practice C: (don't know who I'm painting anymore, just a random face coming out of my brain) Directly using various colors to build forms. Using moon shaped brushes and smudge tool. It's quite fun to play with because of the freedom and oil painting feeling. (though I'm not good with the value but it may be fixable) But it's kinda hard to be finalized if without a direct reference. So not very practical for fan/concept artists...unless you're familiar enough with your own painting to foresee what you're going to finish.

在開Patreon專頁之前我好像不會刻意去記自己做過哪些練習，也不會想去把過程存下來，但現在可以實際感受到每個月都有慢慢在向目標推進、而不是一直在原地打轉(大概啦...希望不會只是幻覺而已)
練習A: 用PS預設的圓筆刷(稍微壓成橢圓形)和塗抹工具畫了個簡單的陰影。但沒法好好把顏色疊上去所以算是失敗惹
練習B: 用帶材質的平頭刷和塗抹工具，以兩個基本顏色(深灰和白/淺橘)來抓造型。基本上可以很快抓到想要且合理的造型，但是顏色和灰度嚴重不足。
練習C: (沒刻意要畫誰，隨意掰的一張臉) 用半月型筆刷和塗抹工具，以比較大膽的顏色直接塗下去。畫的過程蠻自由愜意，但在缺乏參考資料的情況下會很難細化，灰度的表現也略顯呆板，很容易一不小心整張的色調就失控了。在不夠熟悉的情況下似乎是蠻難入門的。

I think it's really cool that you explain the processes, even the ones that didn't work out. It helps to show that creating art isn't just a magical occurrence that an artist gets on the first try, but that it takes a lot of practice, and a lot of experimenting. I think that really helps aspiring artists to be motivated to keep trying even if they struggle or certain things don't work.
I actually admire the colors in practice B, though it could more so be the values. The contrast and strokes in the hair are beautiful (Especially against the background).
This is so inspiring! You’re one of my favorite artists and I love seeing these experiments.
Ah I can understand the pain, PS has the poorest GPU acceleration among many painting software, which makes the smudge tool really laggy. But there're some ways to improve it. It's not easy to tell how to do it only by typing, if you're interested to know, I can show some screen-caps to explain. :D
Oh, I never thought of using PS's smudge tool in a painting because it's so heavy to process (and I'm impatient). It looks to be working for you, I gave up trying to blend in PS. Interesting ways of approach though!
