I glanced up and down the corridor, and it was pretty full with everyone switching classes, so I pulled her a few more feet down and into a nook at a janitor’s closet. She rolled her eyes right back at me. “Have you considered you’re dealing with selection bias?”

“Lauren’s your Prime, you were pretty much born for each other, so it’s not surprising she’s into what you’re into,” Aidra counted off on her fingers. “Lindsey is luck, or happenstance, or whatever. But you met Angie through Lindsey because they were freaky together. Me and Jordan were both recruited by Lauren for your New Year’s Fuckfest, so we both stand out as kinky freaks already. Who else? Zena is another ‘just so happens,’ I guess, so that’s two of them?”
“I get your point,” I said, rubbing her sides with our entwined hands.
“Good,” she said, resting her chin pointedly on my sternum. “Now, you just put me through a workout, so can we get to lunch? I’m hungry.”

“That,” Jay said, gesturing with his half-eaten sandwich, “Is kinda fucked up.”
“You’re telling me,” I sighed.
We were gathered around our usual cafeteria table, and Lauren and I had filled Jay and Benji in on the fucked-upness of the two Judgements I’d done over the week. Thankfully, they both seemed to understand how gross the whole thing was, and Benji kept his trap shut about wanting his X-Ray Vision idea.
“So what are you going to do about it?” Jay followed up.
“He’s gonna fuck up whoever did it, obviously,” Aidra mumbled around her mouthful of food.
“After we figure out who it was, we’ll do something,” Lauren corrected, smirking a little at our slightly more ‘Eye for an Eye’ friend. “But if it’s someone like Jerry, he can’t just go ‘fuck them up.’”
“Skullduggery,” Benji said with an evil grin. “We can at least help with ideas on that, even if we aren’t going to do it ourselves. I’m full of ideas.”
“I’m sure you are,” I said. “And when I know more, I’ll pick your brain.”
“Actually, I was thinking more about that first step,” Jay said after taking a sip of his soda. “The whole thing about someone trying to put sleeper agents into your life and shit. Have you found any more?”
“I… haven’t,” I said, remembering that I’d thought about doing that but then everything with Lindsey and the Siphon rune had happened.
“You haven’t even checked, have you?” Jay snorted.
“More shit happened yesterday that kept me busy,” I argued. “It was a long weekend, OK?”
“Are you going to be able to check people?” Lauren asked me, wincing a little. “Or is it going to drain your batteries?”
I sighed heavily and shrugged. “I was trying not to be… I dunno, invasive in how I use my magic. But I think at this point I probably need to start being a little more proactive, so it makes more sense to just make some permanent changes instead of casting the same spells whenever I think to do it.”
“Magic Vision,” Aidra said. “That’s what you’re thinking, right? So you can see any magic around you, and identify mages so you know who might be a threat?”
“Actually, I think that would be ‘Detect Magic Vision,” Benji said a little smarmily. “Anything to change his vision would be ‘magic vision.’”
“Did you just ‘Um, Actually’ the girl who is most likely to curse you so your dick falls off?” Lauren scoffed and chuckled.
“.... I retract my former statement,” Benji said after a moment of alarm.
“You’re lucky I’m feeling loose and relaxed after English class,” Aidra said, pointing at him and narrowing her eyes.
“Why are you relaxed after class?” Benji asked in confusion.
“Anyways,” I cut in before Aidra could reveal any hints about what we’d been doing right beside him without his awareness. “That’s pretty much what I was thinking, Aidra, unless any of you guys have additions you think I should add.”
I could see Benji wanting to suggest his X-Ray Vision idea and just barely managing to hold it back.
“Horny Meter?” Lauren suggested. “Like a video game HUD so that you can immediately tell how likely someone would be interested in you.”
I grimaced lightly and shook my head. “Useful for sure, but I feel like that might cross the ‘invasive’ line a bit too far for me. Plus, if I’m making it a passive thing, I’d see everyone’s-”
“Jerry?” Jay asked.
I’d cut off mid-sentence because I’d been struck by the still unfamiliar sensation of my pool of power getting fed from afar. Someone was doing something out there.
“Yep,” I coughed. “I’m fine. Just, uh- One sec. Gotta check something.”
I pulled out my phone and quickly messaged my group chat with the girls, asking if any of them were currently testing out the Siphon Rune. When Lauren checked her phone and saw the message, she snorted and grinned at me.
“What is it?” Benji asked, looking between us.
I got several fast replies. Lindsey sent a selfie of herself in class. Stacey sent one as well and was with Tina at the apartment, working at the kitchen island cooking or baking something. Annalise was with Maya, Jordan was in class the same as Linds, and I already knew that Angie was at work.
“Aw, man,” I groaned, making a sour face.
“What is it?” Jay asked.
Lauren started snickering even harder, and leaned over to Aidra and whispered in her ear, and the petite goth snorted and lowered her face, giggling into her hands.
I let out a pained grunt and shook my head. “Part of the whole ‘get more magic’ scheme was figuring out how to siphon my type of power from other people, yeah?” I reminded Jay and Benji. “Well, that New Year’s party? Linds and I had figured out a prototype AoE siphon zone kind of thing and put it around my house since we knew people would be hooking up. It worked, it just wasn’t effective as a repeatable process. But it’s still there, and I can tell when it’s working, and it just started sending me energy.”
“So someone- Someone’s at your house, banging your Mom?” Benji asked, blushing but just barely managing not to guffaw loudly.
“Dude,” Jay said, punching him in the arm, then turning to me. “Dude.”
“I’m gonna assume it’s my Dad sneaking home during lunch for a nooner,” I grumbled, burying my face in my hands and groaning.
“OK, come on,” Lauren said, still grinning. “You’ve had sex twice this morning; the fact that your parents are getting it on shouldn’t shock you at all.”
That raised all-new questioning looks on Jay and Benji’s faces.
“Nice, Lauren,” I sighed. “Nice.”
“Get used to it, guys,” Lauren rolled her eyes. “You being shocked is getting old quick.”
I ended up teleportalling by myself to the Sanctum, leaving the four of them at our table in the Caf like I was just heading out to the washroom. For the best effect I was pretty sure bringing someone with me and having sex while I cast spells in the Amplifier would be the best return-on-investment I could squeak out, but I’d just had sex with Aidra and Lauren had been serious about wanting to fuck me during her gym class again, and pulling one of the other girls out of their lives for a fifteen minute, teleport-to-Hawai’i, quickie felt a little silly. Especially because I’d done all that research into how vision and eyeballs worked for when I healed Maya, so I felt pretty well-equipped to break my spell down into effective pieces.
It took me five minutes, sitting in the middle of the Amplifier and awkwardly meditating on the spell, for me to winnow it down as far as possible. Even with my new ‘Trust the Magic’ revelation from the nightmare with Lindsey, I still had to do some mental work and jump through some philosophical and conceptual hurdles to turn positives into negatives that I could actually believe and therefore apply to the cost of the spell.
Part of me wondered if this was how accountants at gigantic corporations felt doing the taxes so they could pay as little as possible.
Which led to me wondering if I should take a first-year Accounting class in University or something, which then reminded me that I had to go to the fucking Cardinal Admissions office to fix the fact that I hadn’t actually applied.
I might have done more thinking about ‘stuff,’ rather than the spell, in those five minutes.
Nothing changed about the core concept of the spell in that time, and as it settled over me, I took a deep breath before opening my eyes and being assaulted by double the amount of magic floating around and encrusting the Sanctum as I usually saw when I was attuned to the Amplifier.
“Fuck me,” I muttered, knowing that I was going to end up needing to spend a good afternoon there with Lindsey just cataloguing all the different spells I was seeing worming their way through the walls, plinths, sconces and doors of the place. And that didn’t even account for what I had to guess was the complicated shit that would be surrounding the main puzzle lock door up top, or the window in the Library looking out at the lake of lava. Or all the decorative stuff in the bedroom.
How many people did Ezekiel fuck to make this place?
I didn’t linger long looking at the enchantments riddling the Sanctum, wanting to get back to the actual point of the whole vision spell. Because Jay had been right - I really did need to check the people around me. Even Lauren could, technically, be under a spell from another Seat. It wasn’t like we were together all the time.
Returning back to school, I cleared my throat as I stepped ‘out’ of the men’s washroom and headed back into the cafeteria.
“Well?” Lauren asked me as I grabbed my seat next to her again.
“The good news is that I’m not seeing magic pouring through the hallways or anything,” I said. “I’d need to walk the whole school to see if there are enchantments anywhere, but nothing so far. You guys are all clear of spells except for you, Laur, and I can tell the ones on you are what I’ve cast, like the ‘no magical spying’ spell and stuff.”
“Wait, we don’t get protection from being magically spied on?” Benji asked. “How’s that fair?”
“If you’re with one of us, you’re covered,” I said. “And if you’re not, then why would someone want to be spying on you, dude?”
“I think he’s hoping some femme fatale magic action hero is gonna kidnap him or something,” Jay smirked, nudging Benji with his elbow teasingly.
“Fuck off,” Benji sighed, but didn’t deny it.
“How do you see what you’re seeing?” Aidra asked. “And what’s it look like when you look at me?”
“Active magic, and I think stored potential magic, shows up as glowy bubbles where the energy is,” I said. “Like faint outlines, I guess. Light enough that I can ignore it. I might need to adjust the Mage-o-vision part of it, though, it might be a bit strong - it’s showing up as like a hazy cloud above your head, and I can spot a few more of them in the Caf.”
“Like, how far above and how cloudy?” Lauren asked.
Aidra had me stand up, and she stood right in front of me. “Is it in your face?”
“Kind of,” I snorted. “It’s not blocking my vision or anything, but I know it’s there.”
“Make it show up like it’s an NPC Quest Available exclamation mark,” Benji chuckled.
“Then he’ll constantly be going up to people trying to figure out how many local squirrels he needs to kill for random drops to bring back for his quest reward,” Jay snorted.
“I’ll figure something out,” I rolled my eyes.
“So who else is magic in here?” Benji asked, pivoting the conversation, and we had a brief argument between the five of us about whether I should tell Jay and Benji that sort of thing or not. Lauren and Jay were on my side, but I was surprised that Aidra landed with Benji - since I’d already let them in on the big secret of magic, it wasn’t that much of a step to point out they were interacting with mages.
“Plus, Benji will know who not to piss off or risk getting magically punched in the dick, instead of just getting regular punched in the dick,” Aidra smirked.
“I’ve never actually been punched in the dick,” he argued. “I’m not a fucking… I dunno, creepy harasser or someshit.”
I traded glances with Lauren. That whole thing with the Nightvision Drone outside her window flashed through my mind again.
We ended up getting up as a group to do a walkthrough of the school - first of the Cafeteria, and then the rest of the public areas of the school, to check if I spotted anything.
The problem with that plan was that we never made it out of the Cafeteria.
“Fuck,” I grunted as we sat back down at our table, getting some odd glances from the tables nearest us since we’d just circled the room.
“You saw someone with spells on them?” Lauren asked as she sat down across from me, her brow furrowed.
“Could you tell what it was?” Jay asked as he sat down next to her, while Aidra grabbed the spot next to me and Benji stood at the end of the table looking troubled.
“Not immediately,” I sighed. “But - I mean, at first glance it looked the same as Grace and Ned.” I glanced meaningfully at Lauren, since she was the only one who knew the full story about Tina’s more extensive issue.
“Well, who was it?” Aidra asked.
I grimaced. “Tessa, the girl with the blond braid,” I said, not knowing most of my classmates’ last names. “Jack, or Jacob? That kid with the mullet. The quiet girl who always sits in the corner over there by the window reading and hisses at people if they try to talk to her. And Esther Thompson.” That last name I knew - everyone did. She was the head of the Teen Faith Committee, the Purity Club, and the March for Life committee.
What I didn’t tell them was that she also happened to be an Ascended, along with being enchanted.
“Four of them?” Lauren groaned, her eyes going wide. “Fuck.”
“Fuck,” Aidra agreed, one hand gently clawing my thigh under the table.
“Fuuuuck,” Jay grunted, hanging his head.
“I need to double-check if it’s even the same,” I cautioned them. “And it might not be from the same person, or be doing the same thing.”
“Remember that time you stopped the magical apocalypse last week?” Lauren asked. “Maybe life would have been easier if you let it happen.”
“Clean running water,” I reminded her. “Flush toilets. The internet.”
“Fine,” she smirked a little.
“We’re circling back to that,” Jay said pointedly, glancing at the two of us. “But how do you want to get a closer look? How close do you need to get?”
I shrugged, shaking my head and looking around. “I’m not sure - or, really, to be sure about what I’m looking at, I’ll need a minute with each of them.”
“Uh, hello?” Benji asked. “Don’t you have an invisibility spell now or something?”
I closed my eyes. “Every day,” I sighed.
“Every day, what?” Jay asked.
“Every day he’s reminded that he can be a forgetful idiot,” Lauren smirked teasingly at me.
“Gimme five minutes,” I said, reaching across the table and grabbing Lauren’s hand. She let me pull it closer so I could kiss it quickly, then I turned and kissed Aidra on the lips, before I put up my Ignore Me spell around myself.
“How long has he been gone?” Jay asked, blinking and glancing in my direction, but his eyes kept sliding over me.
“It’s so weird being on the outside of that spell and looking at him when he does it,” Aidra smirked, looking over at the others.
I took a moment, after standing up, to do exactly what I knew my two girls would enjoy - first, I stood behind Aidra and slid my hands under her baggy red T-shirt, up her little stomach to her braless tits, rolling her little nipples between my fingers until they got stiff. Then I left her and circled around the table, getting behind Lauren and brushing her hair from her neck so I could softly kiss her there.
Both of them were grinning as I walked away, and maybe it was just chance, but Lauren brought a hand up and rubbed her neck right where I’d kissed her.
I went to Hissy Girl first - our school thankfully didn’t have some raging bullying problem, or else she definitely would have been a target. For the most part, people just avoided her, and she avoided them. I was honestly a little surprised she wasn’t a mage, because that would have explained so much. Like if she was a Cat Shaman or something.
Whatever her deal was, I didn’t have to avoid anyone else since she was always alone and had a buffer zone. She was reading on a Kindle, legs tucked up under her on the cafeteria bench, and I hadn’t noticed it earlier since she wore her hair kinda shaggy, but under her headphones, I realised she was wearing fake elf ears.

Shaking my head, I stepped up behind her and focused on the spell, and just like focusing on something that was too close, as my vision adjusted, it came into focus. It definitely looked a lot like the spell I’d found in Ned and Grace, just… less of it. Simpler? Younger? I examined it, taking my time and deciding that the difference between this one and the Ned/Grace one was fairly in line with the simpling from Tina to them.
Unable to control my curiosity, once I was done with the spell, I got a little closer and looked over her shoulder to check what she was reading.
Kirk grunted in frustration, slamming his big fists against the ship’s terminal. He turned to look at the rest of the Away Party.
“It’s no good,” the Captain said. “We’re out of options. We follow the laws of this planet, or we die.”
“There is only one logical choice, Captain,” Spock said. “We must survive to warn the rest of the crew.”
“Damn it, Jim,” Doctor McCoy sighed. “I’m a Doctor, not a gay pornstar. I don’t know if I can do this.”
“We can,” Captain Kirk said, starting to pull off his uniform to reveal his rippling muscles. “Once we’ve finished their ‘bonding ritual,’ we’ll be allowed to travel unmolested and find communications back to the ship. For now, we’ll just need to fuck each other’s-
“OKAY,” I said loudly, thankfully still covered by my Ignore Me spell.
I guess those were Vulcan ears, not Elf ears.
“Fucking Star Trek slash fiction,” I sighed as I backed away from her. Badly written slash fiction at that.
I went and checked Tessa with the Braid and Jack/Jacob with the Mullet, finding that the spells on them were either very similar or exact copies of the one affecting Star Trek Smut girl. The more I looked at them, the more sure I was that they had to be simplified versions of what I’d already dealt with.
With only one person left to check, I went over to Esther Thompson’s table and hesitated. I could tell from a table away now that she had the same thing going on, so examining her closer like this wasn’t going to give me any more information. So I decided to pivot.
“Hello, Esther,” I sent her in one of my ‘mental mail’ spells. “This is Jeremiah. I know what you are, and I know that you know who I am. I need to talk with you, please. Meet me out in the hall.”
It was kinda interesting feeling the spell take effect and leave my pool of power, and then seeing Esther blink in surprise a moment later. I’d seen the spell manifest like a little doorbell button, right on the side of her head next to her ear. She glanced around, frowning, as one of her Purity Club friends was saying something, and then she twisted up her lips and I watched the ‘button’ depress and start draining into her, disappearing as the magic potential was used up.
I also saw her pale a little, then swallow hard.
“I’ll be right back,” she said, interrupting her friend as she started to stand up.
“I’ll come with you,” one of the girls said, starting to stand as well and grab her purse, obviously doing the ‘girl code’ thing of going in pairs to the bathroom.
“It’s fine,” Esther said, waving her off. “I’ll be quick.”
That, I noticed, got some curious looks from the other girls as Esther brushed her dress smooth after standing and then headed towards the doors out of the Caf.
“She must need to take a huge shit,” one of her friends whispered, making the rest of them snicker.
I snorted and followed Esther. Once we were out in the hallway, she went down the short corridor and then looked in both directions at the T-intersection. Not seeing me, she huffed and set her shoulders, picking a direction at random and starting to walk. I followed her out of view of the Caf doors and then dropped my Ignore Me spell and cleared my throat.
She sniffed hard and almost jumped out of her shoes, whipping around and glaring at me.
“Hey, Esther,” I said, managing not to laugh but not keeping the smirk from my lips.
“Hi,” she said a little coldly. Then she stepped closer - almost surprisingly close, as she dropped her voice. “Look, I figured this was coming at some point. And I get it, OK? Just, can you do my butt and not take my virginity? I’ll suck you off, too. That’s fine. I really am saving myself for marriage, though, and get that you might not care about that, but Lauren would probably-”
“Whoa, hey,” I said, putting my hands out and carefully grabbing her shoulders, getting her to stop. “Esther, I wasn’t using wordplay or something. I actually need to talk to you. Not… Did you think I was going to just make you have sex with me?”
She blinked rapidly about five times, then got a confused look. “Isn’t that your, like, whole thing?”
It was my turn to look at her in confusion. “Why would that be my thing?”
“You, Lauren, and Aidra?” she pointed out, like it made sense. “You’ve been flaunting it around; it’s not a secret.”
“That’s Aidra’s idea, and Lauren’s,” I said. “Not mine.”
“...Oh,” she said.
“I only have sex with people who want to have sex with me,” I reiterated, a little concerned that she actually thought that about me.
“Right,” she said, then got a look on her face that was hard to read as her cheeks flushed a little. “So… you’re not going to fuck me?”
I worked my mouth a few times because her tone was clearly disappointed. “How about I get Lauren to talk to you about that some other time,” I said slowly. “For now, I have non-sex business I need to talk about.”
She flushed even harder but let out a breath and nodded. “Is it about the March for Life event in the spring? I know we make it a pretty heavily religious thing, but I assume since you’re a Fertility Seat, you’re pro-”
“Nope,” I interrupted, not wanting to get into a political discussion at the moment. I honestly wasn’t sure how I felt about that particular issue at the moment, considering all of the Philosophy of the Universe stuff I was dealing with. “Not that. Maybe I just tell you, instead of you guessing and jumping to conclusions?”
“Oh,” she said. “OK.”
“Are you aware that you have a spell that is currently affecting you?” I asked bluntly.
She blinked three times. “Pardon me?”
“I’m on the lookout for spells that are currently either active or waiting to be triggered, that are enchanting the people around me,” I spelt out for her. “I’m seeing one on you, and it’s very similar to what I’m seeing on three non-Mages in our class. I don’t know what all the Ascended can do, or what you can do, so I figured I shouldn’t jump to conclusions. So is the spell on you something you’re aware of, and was it intentional?”
“I- Um- No,” she stammered, and then grimaced. “I didn’t know. What’s it doing?”
“I’m not completely sure, but the reason I started looking was because someone did some creepy memory shit to a couple of people I did a Judgment for. It looks like a smaller version of that.”
I’m not sure Esther could have looked more alarmed. “Can you… get it off me, please?”
“Do you want to wait, or-”
“Nope, don’t want to wait,” she shook her head. “We can make it a Judgement if we have to. The idea of someone messing with my head is not OK. I’ll even give you my virginity if I have to, I’m sure Jesus would understand.”
For some reason, I had a feeling that Esther was kind of looking for a reason to have sex. And she wasn’t half bad looking - definitely not someone I would say no to. “That won’t be necessary on this one,” I said, trying to be reassuring. “Like I said, you can talk to Lauren about… that stuff. Or Aidra, if you’re more comfortable talking to another mage. I just need to know, when I get rid of it, what you notice changing.”
“Do it,” she said.
“OK,” I nodded, offering her my hand. She took it firmly, and I used that to link us as I quickly wrapped the spell woven into her mind up and isolated it, then flicked it into the Unreal and sent it soaring off into the chaos of Nothing to be absorbed by Everything. Or a giant emotion whale. Whichever got to it first. “Done,” I said. “Anything?”
She frowned, shaking her head. “Are you sure you did it?”
“Yeah, it’s gone,” I said.
Esther slowly shrugged and let go of my hand. “I didn’t feel anything change. What happened to the other people?”
“They had their memories pretty heavily modified, and had lived the last month or so as different people,” I shorthanded for her.
She shrugged again, shaking her head. “I’m not having any big flashbacks or revelations,” she said.
“OK,” I frowned. “Can you let me know if you do think of something that feels off? If you can’t find me, you can tell Lauren or Aidra.”
“Sure,” she said. “Should I be worried here?”
“I don’t know,” I sighed. “Maybe? Keep an eye out for anything weird. Someone put those spells on you and the other three, and maybe more. I’ll be on the lookout for more to see if I can spot a pattern or something.”
She blew out a breath, tutting for a moment with her brow furrowed, and then re-confirmed that nothing was going on in her memory that she could think of, or that she remembered the spell. I thanked her, and she nodded and left to head back to her friends in the Caf.
I sighed and leaned back against the lockers in the corridor, closing my eyes as I stretched my neck. What the fuck was going on with these spells?
The real problem was that I was going to need to invest a bunch of power into tracking down who was doing them if I didn’t find a more natural lead, and investing power wasn’t exactly something I was equipped to do at the moment. Especially if it just led to one of the other Seats and all that came out of it was an ‘Ah, you caught me. Nice!’ sort of confrontation.
“So, if you were to do me in the butt, you could make it particularly good, right?”
I blinked my eyes open and found that Esther had come back and I hadn’t noticed. She was standing straight, one leg bouncing nervously and a flush up her neck and into her cheeks, her hands behind her back and thrusting out her chest slightly.
“Yeah, I can,” I said. “Both ways.”
“Both ways?” she asked.
“Through magic, and through patience and skill,” I clarified.
That made her blush harder.
I snorted softly, smiling at her. “Do you want to find a place so I can fuck that ass, Esther?”
She bit her lip and gave me a look that was very horny.
How did I keep finding these cute freaks?

I came across your work on Lit and fell in love with this series and am so happy it is an active series too! It quickly became one of my all time favorites up there with Endangered from LTPC and a couple of stories from BurntRedstone. I just caught up to this chapter after doing a full reread. Thanks so much for all the work and love you have put into this series, it clearly comes across! The past two chapters have been incredible, I love the direction and am glad to delve into the magic side of the world as well. No notes (other than the obligatory fuck Benji) because you’ve clearly got a handle on things and I can’t wait to follow along, and thank you for bringing joy with your stories!

Great stuff! I loved that ending scene with Esther, too fun. The mysteries continue, as well ... I miss the days when I had dozens of chapters from multiple of your stories to devour back to back! But I'm thankful you are getting into hopefully a nice free flowing groove this month :)
