This weekend, I finally did something I’ve wanted to do my entire life… I played and beat the original Sam and Max Hit the Road. I didn’t have a gaming PC growing up, so I missed out on a lot of point and click adventures. I caught up on as many as I could once I got one; the Monkey Island games, Leisure Suit Larry, even the Telltale Sam and Max games. But never the original. Growing up, I’d always read about it in gaming magazines, in top 10 lists, in website essays. I dreamed of the day where I’d finally get to experience for myself that beautifully animated spritework, that witty and scathing sense of humor, the mad-cap detective romp with inventive puzzles… And finally, I can say I did it. I didn’t just play, but I BEAT Sam and Max Hit the Road. The game that eluded me for so long, even as a longtime fan of Sam and Max. I beat the game I wanted for my entire childhood.
It was all right. Didn’t really like it, to be honest.

Yeah, Hit the Road is guilty of all the sins that lead to the downfall of the entire genre at the time: Moon Logic (which you can almost excuse as cartoon logic here, but it still doesn't make for very intuitive gameplay or good puzzle design), pixel hunting, a plot that just sorta fades into the background. Sam and Max as characters also feel weirdly out of their element even compared to the comics, feeling much more bitter and annoyed than their usual positive (if violent) selves. It's damn beautifully animated, though, and it's still neat to experience an oldschool Lucasarts game like this. At the very least, it has me excited for the upcoming Devil's Playhouse remaster.

Hit the Road is a game that...aged. I feel like the old school point n click Moon Logic is sometimes at its worst in that one. It's a solid and funny game but everyone looks at that game through some really thick nostalgia goggles imo
