Her words hit a nerve, but I kept my focus on the tiles, scrubbing one last time for good measure. “He’s not my friend anymore,” I said firmly, glancing over my shoulder.
“Good,” she said with a nod, her voice lighter now. “You don’t need that kind of influence.”
I gave her a quick smile, hoping she wouldn’t linger. “Yeah, I know.”
Satisfied, she stepped back, muttering something about dinner. As soon as the door clicked shut, I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding and tossed the sponge into the bucket.
