Bennett’s smile grew, and he let out a small, almost relieved chuckle. “Yeah, I kinda figured,” he said, his tone teasing but gentle. “I mean, you’re not exactly subtle, Eli. But… I needed time. Time to figure my own shit out. And you gave me that. Even when it probably hurt.”
I swallowed hard, nodding as my emotions swirled. “I thought I was being slick about it, as usual. But I didn’t want to lose you. That’s all that mattered to me.”
Bennett stepped closer, his arms slipping around my waist and pulling me into a tight hug. His chin rested on top of my head, and I melted into him, feeling safe and whole in a way I hadn’t in years. “Eli, you’re about as slick as a desert,” he murmured, the warmth in his voice making me smile through the tears. “But you never lost me. And now? You’ve got me completely.”
