“Nothing, just Mark about the last party before break. Logistics, babe. Don’t worry.” She flashed a wide smile and immediately poured herself more wine, straight from the bottle this time.
Dinner finally hit the table. Maddie claimed the seat next to me and kept leaning over to refill. By the time Mom started passing the turkey, Maddie was slurring every word and laughing at jokes nobody told.
She reached for the gravy boat, missed, and knocked over her wine. Red splashed across the white tablecloth like blood. Aunt Lisa cackled. Mom’s eye twitched harder.
Then it happened. Maddie stood up suddenly, chair scraping loud. “I gotta… bathroom…” She took one step, turned green, and projectile-vomited straight onto the turkey. But this night? This was nothing.
