Expanse and Black Sails were both shows where I watched the premieres when they came out, was unimpressed, dismissed them, saw cult fan followings grow in their second seasons, gave them another chance, and then they become among my favorite shows ever. I love both their first seasons now but they definitely take a long time laying a sturdy foundation that they get nuts with in later seasons.

The Expanse is one of those shows where I loved the first season but it definitely doesn't find its voice, so to speak, until season 2 and beyond; I feel like there are a few shows like this where once you get to season 2 you can't imagine a time you didn't love it. Shows like Expanse, Black Sails, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Avatar: The Last Airbender, & Turn all fit this mold in my opinion. Once they establish their worlds and characters very firmly they go nuts.

In retrospect, the meeting at the hotel was kind of where the fuse really gets lit on the series. Then they bring Bobbie in for S2 and things really kick off.

I loved it from the first episode but yeah the first season is mostly world building.
