I was watching Gurren Lagann as it was playing in Japan. I have to admit I stopped watching the show at episode 8. It wasn't until a year later I went back and rewatched it all and I regret that I took so long.

Your supposed to hate that he dies, the show does it’s best to make you love him so that you go through the same pain as Simon, it teaches the viewer about loss and instead of using the people u look up to as a crutch to grow as your own individual. I love this show because of how brave it is. The show has a much deeper meaning to it than just mechs fighting, and as bizarre the story may get at time you can always find yourself relating to it in some way.

If you look at the animation screen that always plays when they merge his icon is blacked out, meaning there is nothing alive inside that cockpit. He is literally only alive through sheer willpower, and once he finished there was nothing left.

It's kinda funny. I never really liked Kamina's character when he was alive. It wasn't until after I saw how his death affected everyone else that I came to appreciate his character more. Anyway, next episode is when the story really opens up.
