Gon was always a bit iffy, he always had questionable moral compass and more selfish approach to things. Thats how kids actually are. And even before this arc we saw him being ok with getting his hands blown off , forgiving a serial killer because he helped Gon train. He saw countless deaths and murders during hunter exam and he was chill. Chimera ant arc just is much much darker and Gon , with his iffy moral compass and being a kid is getting in the thick of this situation , so its just briging out his psychological issues out in the open more. This is Gon, happy go lucky Gon also exist, both can co exist in this one person. And it makes his characters much more interesting considering hes the usual shounen protagonist
